Sweet Apricot Creamsicle Breakfast Biscuits

by Liza Mansour @ oh hotcakes

These biscuits will be a hit in any household. The dried apricots pair perfectly with sultanas and add a nice surprise to the sweet, buttery, flaky, and soft biscuit dough. I’ve tried many biscuit recipes, and this one is the best by far. Wake up, preheat the oven and prepare yourself to have an amazing breakfast or brunch with these little biscuits. I made an apricot compote, and cashew cream to go with these, but you could easily eat them fresh with some vegan butter, or just plain if you want to keep it simple. The basic biscuit dough is amazing without the added apricots and sultanas, so if you also would just like savory biscuits, then cut out the sugar and add 1 tsp of salt instead. Easter is soon, and a great way to welcome Easter, as well as Spring, is with these delicious carrot caramel walnut mini cakes! These are made using a cupcake pan, and the recipe is perfectly moist and doesn’t rise too much so you’re able to layer of the cupcakes on top of each other with a cinnamon buttercream! A vegan caramel sauce is in the middle of each cupcake so as you bite into them, you get a sweet and sticky surprise. Shopping Inventory 2016

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

Here it is, everything I bought over the last year that wasn't a regular need, so no food and basic personal care stuff. This post was accidentally published 7 weeks too early, but is complete for the year now.

* Books
Physical, print books: zero bought, but 1 obtained for free
Kindle books: 14 (including one collection).
As the object is always primarily to reduce stuff, Kindle books don't really count. ;)
Made good use of the local library system.
Second year of book no buy successfully completed - yay! ☺☺☺

* Cosmetic Items
3 mascaras when old ones ran out/went yacky - one black, two clear (one used up, one in use).
2 eyeshadow primers, one of which I then resold on eBay.
1 CC cream/foundation
I also bought 6 perfumery items which were going off the market, and was given 5 by my mum, 3 of which are currently on eBay!

* Art Materials
Zero, (unless you count the cheap pair of compasses I got to help me draw circles for a design).

* Needlework Supplies  (changed from 'Embroidery Supplies' to include other types of work)
Broken down into categories as follow:
Yarn:
1 x 100g ball of white DK to complete a project (and plan to use more of in others, probably next year now), 1 x 50g ball of white, 2 x 50g balls of cream and 1 x 50g of light apple green Snuggly DK. 1 x 100g ball lavender blue cotton DK for imminent baby knits (one blue cardy already knit up)
1 x 100g ball of bright pink bamboo soft yarn to make a scarf for me (in progress).
Fabric:
1 x bargain fat quarter of white 55ct Edinburgh linen for use for miniatures.
1m white polycotton and 1m narrow elastic to make an underskirt (done)
2 x silk theme packs (5 pieces of 10"x10" in each) from the Silk Route and one piece of pewter silk jacquard
2 x pieces of metal organza in aqua blue and light jade green
1m x 45cm piece of bondaweb/vliesofix as I'd used all but a 4"x5" piece of my supply up
6 4" squares of goldwork leather in various colours
Thread:
2 reels of sewing cotton: cream for use as a thin embroidery thread for miniature and bright pink to alter a skirt.
1 reel of Madeira silver machine thread
2 packs of Madeira Silk in ecru (used half of one)
1 reel of bright pink machine rayon thread
Sundries:
14 buttons for immediate use on 3 baby cardigans
4 zips used for scatter cushion covers, 3 used so far
3 packs of decorative buttons
5 packs of small sequins
1 hanger for a bellpull type project (used)
1 large wheelbarrow button
5 packs of specialist needles
4 yellow flower trims and one snowflake
1 small bottle of craft glue

(I went shopping a bit at the Harrogate Show this year!! ♥☺)

* Clothes etc:
2 pairs of pyjamas
3 x 5 packs of cotton knickers
2 x pairs of specialist 'problem foot' shoes - ooouch, pricey! (And terribly uncomfy too, waaah, pain!)

* Miscellaneous  8" Acer tablet computer, which I use a lot.
Miniatures: a single bed, a chaise longue, a carver chair, a sideboard, a bedside cabinet, 3 small tables, 2 pieces of carpet and some trimmings (a lamp, set of 2 candlesticks, clock and pewter platter) - all to be used as models for future miniature embroideries sales and many serving as ornaments in the meantime.

What about the year coming up?  Well, I think I'm going to continue inventorizing what I buy, maybe even extending it to all personal care stuff out of a curiosity to see how much I use in a year.  I still need some new clothes and my poor feet need help, fast!  Also, I want to carry on clearing out a lot more than I take in.

Results are in for April, plus goal list for May.

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

... and it wasn't tremendously inspiring last month either!  I think that I do really well on my goals the first time I set a series after a long break.  I feel really motivated and keen to get as many as possible completed.  After that, it just goes down and up and back down again until I drop the idea for a while.  Then we start again with a major productivity push!!

Last month I completed eight of the 28 items and got one more as far as I was going to for the time being as it needed, basically, re-starting when I had more experience.  What I did get done was:

* Deal with fridge freezer  Done!
* Clean bathroom wall - dust on artex  Done!
* NRSV Bible Psalms 63 - Song of Solomon  Ps 63 - 118 & Ecclesiastes
* Finish 'Getting Along With the Chinese'  0.6/11 remaining chapters
* Finish reading 'The Help' and pass on to Ellie  Done!
* Catch up WT & LMMWB bits and pieces  LMMWB bits done, WT stuff not only not done, but increased in quantity!
* Embroidery on cream baby knit  Done!
* Finish knitting pink scarf  Done!
* Start black chunky cardy  Done!
* Sort the sizing for my own cable jumper and get on with it  Just finishing sizing problem, then shelving until 2 simpler knits are done. More experience needed!
* Start on bag making tasks (backpack, knitting bag, manicure pouch)  bought backpack pattern
* Finish invisible hemming pink skirt  Done!
* Get stretch knit fabrics (from winter fabric collections) for future clothes sewing projects  Done!

Everything else was totally untouched during the month - including all but two of the red tasks from last time, from which I can conclude that putting them in red doesn't work for me.  To be honest, I'm still doing the stuff I'm actually bothered about.  When it comes to the Go Bag, I think my laxness in attending to it shows how concerned I am about disasters happening in the area.  It is part done and has self-heating meals, a good first aid kit, painkillers, Savlon soap, insulating blanket thingies and some other stuff in, plus I've scanned and uploaded my personal ID documents etc to two different cloud services and there are two large bottles of water near the door ready to grab in an emergency, so I'm not entirely unprepared....

Moving swiftly on!!

Here's my list for May, much less detailed in some areas and reinstating the health/exercise categories.

Health
* Remedial Exercises twice daily - when not ill!!
* Lose 4lbs more - I've lost 7lbs already (started a shave off 10st), so goal weight at end of month will be 9st 2lbs.  I've been losing an average of 1lb per week since mid-March and am very pleased with progress so far.
* Start tone up & flexibility exercises adding a little more every few days/week

Domestic  & Admin
* Finish that blasted Go Bag, if only to get the dratted thing OUT of the living room and downstairs near the door where it belongs.
* Clean bathroom window
* Renew passport - we didn't have the money for it last month, but this time it should be ok.  A friend in Germany died and I don't even have the option to go to any memorial service for her as I can't travel internationally right now!

Reading and Study
* NRSV Bible Psalms 119, Proverbs, Song of Solomon & most of Isaiah
* Finish 'Getting Along With the Chinese' from 4.6, or I may just dump it as I have so many other titles I've plainly lost interest in actually reading.
* Read at least half of 'Relearning to See'
* Catch up WT bits and pieces, which increased from last month.
* Vocab transfer from WTs
* Do some language and/or science study

Creative
* Get on with 'Paradise Island cross stitch    65-70% complete so far
* Do some other embroidery
* Make a t-shirt - at a workshop on sewing with knit fabrics I'm going to on 10th
* Finish black chunky cardy
* Knit Veli baby hat
* Knit Tang baby cardy
* Start on bag making tasks (Sat-Nav bag, backpack, knitting bag, manicure pouch)
* Make kids' picture books out of magazine picture collection

Let's see how it goes.

I'm not even going to bother posting the end of March stuff, 'cos it was such a lousy month for goal work.  In fact, it was a really slow month for most things and I can't think that I got much done, except that I seem to have lost 2 or 3 of the 15-20lbs I hope to get rid of so that I can get back into my clothes and look better in the ones I plan to make.  So, that's good, but I haven't finished a single book, met a single reading challenge, done more than a stitch or two of embroidery, studied much at all....  I did knit a premature baby cardy and trimmed it up, as well as got around to trimming up a knit from last month, but that's pretty much all.  I actually only completed one goal from the March list of 25! Must be an all time low.  Well, the only way is up, right??

I loved Glenis's idea of putting a task in red that had been on the list more than 2 months already, so this version here will show those items in embarrassing vibrance.  Some are already on their 5th time on recent lists alone, i.e. were carried through from lists from previous years! [Imagine that horrified emoji here!!!]  The two in darker red are ones that have appeared in some form twice before, but not quite as they are here (i.e. they just need finishing and/or the project is further on, but still dragging on).

28 items in total this time:

Domestic and Admin

* Deal with fridge freezer
* Finish the Go Bag
* Clean bathroom window
* Clean bathroom wall - dust on artex
* Go through book boxes (3) for any to sell etc
* Renew passport

Reading and Study
* NRSV Bible Psalms 63 - Song of Solomon
* Finish 'Getting Along With the Chinese'  4/15
* Read 'Relearning to See'
* Finish reading 'The Help' and pass on to Ellie
* Catch up WT & LMMWB bits and pieces
* Finish 'Discovering Science Book 3' (chs 8 - 18)
* Complete 'Modern Chinese Beginners Course' vol 3 (chs 59b - 75)
* 'Fun With Chinese Characters Vol 1'  (12 - 40)
* 'Beijing's Courtyards' reader (chs 1 - 5)
* Chinese vocab transfer from recent study material - 3 x WTs, Imitate & Kingdom books
* Finish 'Teach Yourself German' (ch 17b to end)
* Re-start 'German in Three Months'

Creative
* Work 'Paradise Island cross stitch to at least 85% completion  65-70% complete
* Embroidery on cream baby knit
* Work on rose thread painting
* Finish knitting pink scarf   60-70% done  Need to measure against another scart to determine final length
* Start black chunky cardy
* Sort the sizing for my own cable jumper and get on with it
* Start on bag making tasks (backpack, knitting bag, manicure pouch)
* Finish invisible hemming pink skirt
* Get stretch knit fabrics (from winter fabric collections) for future clothes sewing projects
* Make kids' picture books out of magazine picture collection

It is, of course, just possible, that these red tasks keep getting neglected 'cos I'm not terrifically bothered about them???  Hmm, worth thinking about.  I keep asking myself how genuinely interested I am in books etc that I keep failing to read or study....  I've got rid of all the definite 'never going to open' ones and have only kept those that have a respectable chance, but I'm beginning to question the respectability of that chance after all now.  We'll see.  We'll see.

One thing I did notice was that I was definitely more faithful to my remedial neck etc exercises when they were on the goals list than when not.  I'll give myself another trial month and then they go back on.

April can only be better than March for results, right?

Book Inventory update.

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

Yay! I made it to below 500 books! Can you believe it? I'm not sure I can and am afraid of finding out that I miscounted and skipped back a hundred somewhere...  But no, I do seriously think it's for real.

I started out with a count of 1119 back when I first created an inventory before the book cull began. That included a few dozen that I considered my hubby's books (probably about 50 or even more) and around 150 that I felt were shared (journal bound volumes and about 70 or more Chinese textbooks! ). When I recounted yesterday there were more or less 490.

The total of 490 doesn't include any books that have been separated out to be given away, just the ones to keep for now. It also doesn't include 6 or 7 map books and several dozen travel and attraction guidebooks as they are almost all bought by my husband and so I have decided that, as he won't agree to getting rid of them, he'll have to take sole responsibility for them. The total also excludes about 20 A4 sized music learning booklets, but I realized that I never actually included them in the initial count. I've added most of them to the Read Up page along with a number of art and embroidery/textile titles that I want to finish with.

My Read Up page (old and now replaced) now consists of about 230 entries and I've put a timescale to it - October 2021 when I turn 50!! That list was originally created in early February this year and I've completed 32 of the books already (one finished just this morning -hurrah!) with 9 more in progress and 5 that are part done, but that I'm not on with just now. That means that I'll need to complete an average of 2.8 books per month in order to polish off the whole lot and get my book collection down to around 300.

Is that a feasible goal? Could be. Some books I really only need to take a few notes from and I'm finished with and some others are just general reading or quick to study/revise. Others, however, will need more time and brain power, or are long reads such as a few Bible translations. The Bible's a great read, but it's a bit too intense to read through like a novel!  Having said that, I'll be working on as many as 10 books at any one time (9 just now), so, mathematically speaking,  I could work through that sort of pile over 3 months each time and be home and dry by 49!! There are a LOT of language learning textbooks in my collection and a fair few science texts too, which'll take time and brain...

Some of the arts titles are going to be trickier to estimate timewise as, whilst I can read stuff like Helen M Stevens' inspiration titles and Betty Edwards' "Color" relatively freely, a number of the others require me to work through painting and stitching skills.

So, it's a challenge, but I'm up for it!

Use-Up and Clear Out Inventory 2016

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

Here's the other part of the annual inventory - I decided to do a separate post for this section this year.  The headings are the same, but this one is for what went out, not what came in.

* Books  Several boxes given to charity, friends and the local library before moving in February and others throughout the year.
Finished reading/studying about 10, 7 given away or sold (I lost count on both of these, so I need to keep closer track next year)
Collection reduced by about 55%! ☺☺

* Cosmetic Items
Finished: 1 foundation (another has 1 or 2 goes left in it), 2 mascaras, 1 lipstick, 4 lip colours, 1 lip gloss, 2 lip balms and 3 perfumes.
Sold or given away: 4 lipsticks and 4 eye shadows (3/1 still to go out) and 1 eye primer.  3 perfumes currently on eBay.

* Art & Craft Materials
7 card blanks with envelopes, although 5 of these cards haven't yet been sent to anyone.
1 piece of purple A4 card and 1 piece of extra thick white
Bag of stickers almost completely used up on eBay sales packaging etc (sold or gave away most of them before this year started)

* Needlework Supplies
Yarn:
Almost 1 whole 100g ball
4 remnants of DK plus one more run down to a tiny bit left for stitch samples.
Most of the ball of 6 ply red.
Fabric:
5 x patchwork pieces (about 1/3 of a fat quarter in size??)
Completed using up light cream cotton
Several other parts of fat quarters and remnants.
15"x15" white Oslo
6½" square white hardanger
12"x4" lilac Jobelan.
Sold: 80%+ of Oriental fabrics, all 5 fancy fabrics, several pieces of linen/evenweave (including a bundle of 7 currently on eBay and with bids).
Collection approximately halved! ☺☺
Thread:
1 x Pearl Cotton #5 (1 - Bright White)
1 x pack ecru Madeira Silk
Finished up ±3 small spools of sewing thread
Sold: 115 threads (about 7% of collection), 6 packs of beads, large bag of ribbons
Sundries:
Most of my supplies of lightweight quilt batting and Bondaweb
All newly bought buttons, and 3 of 4 zips
3 bellpull ends/hangers

* Clothes etc
A few large bags (between the 2 of us) given to charity just before moving in February and another bag gone just yesterday.
A number of novelty bags and other personal items also went in the latest charity drop off.

* Miscellaneous
6 bottles/tubs of nutrient/herbal supplements used up, not likely to be replaced.
2 large boxes of cassette tapes thrown away on moving (also contained some videos)
1 box of possible-to-sell cassettes, CDs and DVDs donated to charity on moving.

* Domestic Items
2 large bookcases (one with glass doors), sofabed & matching armchair, fireplace and wood effect bathroom fittings given away via Freecycle on moving
Boxful of household items and ornaments donated to charity on moving.
1 bag of bedding and fabric scraps donated yesterday.

During 2017 I hope to get through a whole lot more books as 10 really isn't that many for me.  After the initial push to get stuff read in preparation to move, I lost momentum with my reading projects and really only re-gained it in the last fortnight of the year.  I need to keep this up and try and get the 460-ish books that I'm beginning the new year with down to under 400 if I can.  Onwards and downwards....

12 best cruelty-free and vegan make-up products

The Independent

Living as a vegan can be tough, with animal products commonly found in everything from food and clothing to household essentials. Beauty is one area that often proves a stumbling block, as it can be tricky and time-consuming to check that every ingredient in your go-to product is vegan. If you fancy pairing a red lip with your LBD, the chances are it will contain carmine, made from ground-up red beetles. How about a lashing of mascara to dramatise your look? Careful, it probably contains beeswax.

Almond Milk Demand in UK Grows at Astonishing Pace

In great news for cows, the demand for almond milk in the UK is exploding, with an annual growth rate of 70 to 80 percent. There’s no telling what’s behind this surge, but almond milk clearly carries a number of powerful advantages: no animal cruelty worries, a far smaller environmental footprint, no association with methane production,... March Goals List

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

Here's the list for March.  I decided to drop the 'Physical' category for the month and see how I get on keeping up to it without the accountability element.....  I plan to keep to only buying sweets a maximum of twice per month, keeping oil/fat content of foods low, increasing proportion of raw food, doing my remedial and some stretching exercises and, once the current bout of post-viral and hormonal fatigue has passed, getting back into graded walking most days.

I lost a  lot of time to illness last month and am starting this one a bit under par, but I'm not dead yet, so onwards and upwards! ☺ Regular updates in the usual place.

Number of goals for the month:  25

Domestic
* Take care of neglected recycling - boxes at mum's and water filter cartridges - end month with recycling as up to date as reasonably possible
* Finish the Go Bag overhaul - DO these two this month!
* Give bathroom window a thorough cleaning
* Check over everywhere for 'clutter creep' and get some charity (or rag) bags/sales going as needed

Reading and Study
* NRSV Bible Psalms
* Finish 'Getting Along With the Chinese'
* Read 'Relearning to See'
* Re-start 'Daniel' book study - chs 9 & 10
* Study 'Discovering Science Book 3' to section 12 (from 7)
* Complete DS3   I've put this as a separate goal so that I can at least claim one completion for making a decent amount of progress
* Complete 'Modern Chinese Beginners Course' vol 3 (ch 59-75)
* 'Fun With Chinese Characters Vol 1' No.s 13 - 35 (approx one per study hour day)
* 'Beijing's Courtyards' reader, chs 1 - 4 (Sunday study hour instead of MCBC3)
* Chinese vocab transfer from recent study material
* Finish 'Teach Yourself German' (chs 17b, 18 and supplement)
* Re-start 'German in Three Months' (from ch 7)

Creative
* Work on 'Paradise Island cross stitch - work towards completion, at least 85%
* Start winter design project - some artwork and charting the cross stitch design(s)
* Work another freestyle piece, either another Trish Burr small thread painting or that meadow scene from the Sue Newhouse book.  TBC.  I may even go mad and do both??  Doubtful....
* Finish knitting pink scarf
* Knit white preemie baby jacket
* Embroider and add buttons to cream and blue baby knits
* Get to grips with sizing for my own cable jumper and make good progress with it
* Make kids' picture books out of magazine picture collection

Business
* Make good use of the 'business hour (10:30-11:30 Mn-Fr) to develop ideas, do research, start writing, whatever - just DO it!

I'm feeling good about this list and I think it looks very do-able.  Just have to keep an eye on my health and remember to be modest - to live within my limits and stop forgetting about them when I'm feeling relatively normal.  This will be the hardest bit.... ☺

Make Up Inventory - mid year count 2016

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth Braun) @ Fluffy Little Idiot

I thought I'd start doing counts every 6 months, not just annually, to help keep me focused and have more of an interim goal to work towards.  May not be terribly interesting to anyone other than me!!!

Here are the figures from the last count on 1 Jan this year, the current numbers and the current goal.

* Eye shadows (individual shades, not palettes/trios etc): Last count 64, now 60.  Haven't used any up, but put 4 more singles on one side to give away.  Unsure of goal on this one at the mo.  Originally it was 75, which I passed a while ago, but my current piece of paper says 50, a number I no longer really care about.

* Lipsticks: Last count 13, now 10. I used one up and there are 2 with the 4 single eye colours ready to be offered to a friend.  They're warm colours that no longer suit me.  Goal: 6

After a bit of working out which fell into which category:

* Lip colours (mostly liquid lipsticks or well pigmented colours in palettes): Last count 14, now 14.  Odd thing is, I used 2 up and have bought none.  Must have miscounted at some point.  Ditto with the next line!  Goal: 6-8, although my current list says 10-12.  I think that's probably too many at one go.

* Lip glosses (low pigmented colours): Last count 20, now 19, but have finished up 2 and bought none, so must have gaffed it at some point.  That's not like me as I'm normally so precise.  Hmmmmm! =(  Goal: 3 or 4 - just a clear, a clear sparkle, a golden sparkle and maybe one more.

Moving on....

* Blusher: Last count 9, now 9.  I'm plugging away day in day out at the bright pink one, with occasional use of the lilac-pink and even more sparing use of the red (all from my school days in the 80s), but no discernible progress.  This one's going to take literally decades to go all the way down!!!  Goal: 3 or 4

* Foundation: Last count 4, moved 1 to the 'Primer' category (a CC cream) and used 1 up, so now 2.  Goal: 1 or 2 I'll get a Lush Colour Supplement one day, but not until the CC primer has gone.  May also keep an all in one in stock.  We'll see.

* Powder: Last count 2, and still now 2.  Again, working away on one I remember having in high school (yes, it's still fine, although the mirror is broken), but although the dip seems to have deepened a bit, it's going to be a long job.  Goal: 1, but I'm not expecting to reach this for a few years yet.....

* Primer: Last count 1, now 2 following the re-classification of my Bourjois CC cream as a primer and not a foundation.  I'm working on this one daily one way or another.  I either mix it with the foundation I'm using up, or just with some moisturiser and use as a CC tinted moisturiser.  I like the effect of a little of this product, but it's not cruelty free, so I won't be replacing it when it's finally finished, which I estimate to happen in 2/3 more years' time.  Goal: 1 - just an eye primer, when I find one that's any good.  The E.L.F. one was a total disappointment.  I was told it was great by more than one source, but it's exactly the same as using none - I trialled it by priming one eye and not the other.  =(

* Perfumes: Last count 12, now 19.  Yes, I've bought some.  Actually, the reason for that was that I genuinely thought that Soap and Glory's Orangeasm was going off the market, but later on I found out that they were just dumping the whole tonic spray range and that the body sprays appear to be staying.  Not before I'd sourced 3 body sprays on e-bay and 1 in Boots, plus 2 tonic sprays on e-bay.  I was also given 5 old Yves Rocher perfumes by my mum in 2 different scents, so that made 11 items in. That means that I've used up 3 so far this year and I'm working on 2 more at the mo.  Goal: 6-ish

So, that's it for the last half year.  I've used up 8 things, (more if you count mascara, which I've dropped as a counting category as I reached goal) and worked intensively on another 11 so far, but with little impact, except on perfumes.  I've also been using eye shadow more often and getting a feel for what suits me better these days and what colours, combos and 'sparkliness' level I like.  That means that I may lift the No Buy on this category and get one or two carefully considered products to supplement what I have left.  Only eye shadow though and even then, only a few!

Hope to finish up my current foundation and another 5 or 6 lippies of varying types and 2 or 3 perfumes by the end of this year.  I'll still be working on the powder things too, but am not expecting anything to be finished off.

Next update: 1 Jan 2017, complete with photos.

Cinnamon Peach Blueberry Crumble

by Liza Mansour @ oh hotcakes

Summer is on its way, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the lovely warm weather with this peach and blueberry crumble. It’s sweet, tangy, soft, and crunchy-everything that makes a dessert complete. I’ve made this recipe so that it’s a perfect serving for 2 people, or 4 if you don’t mind sharing a little more. Pair it with your favorite non-dairy ice-cream, and you have yourself a delicious dessert that you won’t feel too guilty about having afterward. I mean, it’s mainly fruit, right? I prefer a vanilla based non-dairy ice-cream, but in the photos below, I chose to use a ginger cookie caramel coconut ice-cream. I wish I still had more in the freezer but that stuff always disappears quickly. Hope you try out this recipe! If you haven’t seen my last post, I made mini carrot caramel walnut cakes, check it out!

When the Leaping Bunny Logo is a Lie | Cruelty-Free Kitty

Cruelty-Free Kitty

Butter London nail polish bottles proudly sport a Leaping Bunny logo, but the information I came across shows that it might be a sham: There is no mention or official claim on the brand's website. Why would Butter London keep so quiet about being cruelty-free? In May 2012, the company claimed to be "in the process" of getting their Leaping Bunny certification. After checking with the Leaping Bunny, no record of Butter London being "in the process" of getting certified was found. Even if they were in the process of getting certified, they would not be able to display the logo until after they officially became certified, since companies have to pay for the right to display the logo, and they can only do so after they join the program. Displaying a logo while being in the process of acquiring certification simply makes no sense! The company has had the same Leaping Bunny logo on its nail polish at least since 2010. This makes their claim even more ridiculous.Of course, I have e-mailed Butter London about this matter. Their reply was vague and elusive...

The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes

by Tashina Combs @ Logical Harmony

Many Logical Harmony readers ask for help finding cruelty-free makeup brushes. For many people who transition to a cruelty-free beauty routine, switching to cruelty-free makeup brushes is often one of the last steps. So many makeup brushes are made from animal fur or animal hair. While some brands do claim that it is ethically sourced, the truth is that they often don’t know where the fur is sourced from. Just like with false lashes, many animal hair makeup brushes are bi-products of the factory farming or fur industries. While most cruelty-free consumers do focus on avoiding animal testing, many also avoid makeup brushes that are not synthetic. That’s why I decided to create this guide to cruelty-free makeup brushes. There are so many vegan makeup brushes out there to try. All the brands listed do make vegan makeup brushes but may make some non-vegan brushes as well. What are Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes? Cruelty-free makeup brushes are made from synthetic fibers. They are not made from animal fur or animal hair. Can brands that are cruelty-free make makeup brushes from animal fur or animal hair? Yes. Because the term “cruelty-free” refers to animal testing, brands that do not test on animals can make makeup […]

Peanut Butter & Jam Pop Tarts

by Liza Mansour @ oh hotcakes

I used to love pop tarts when I was younger. I was fascinated by all the different flavors and how easy and fast they were to make in the toaster. These homemade pop tarts take a little more effort because they obviously aren’t made in the toaster, but they’re really quick to make and taste even better than the store-bought kind. For breakfast, who doesn’t love a peanut butter and jam sandwich? These taste just like a real pb&j sandwich except the pie crust which makes them super delicious. You get the flaky, butter and rich crust and then a gooey, smooth, peanut butter and jam center. One of the best parts about a pop tart was always the glaze on top. The glaze on these is a simple royal glaze made with pink vegan food coloring and topped with sprinkles. Sprinkles make everything taste and look better. I hope you try this recipe out! It’s so fast and easy, and you’ll never want to buy store-bought pop tarts again!

Face Wipes vs Make up removing cloth by Glov

by Paula @ All Things 7 with Paula

Hello, I come to you today with a bit of a rant and product comparison. I am annoyed with myself that I bought something without researching it or at least checking the ingredient list. To be honest it never crossed my mind that in a small facial wipe there can be so many harmful chemicals. Probably all these are in minimal amounts but any skincare junkie probably uses many products each day and all the chemicals absorbed through the skin can quickly add up. I have found an amazing chemical free alternative to face wipes. They require a little bit of maintenance but oh boy aren't they worth it.

Are there cruelty-free brands at Dermstore? You may be surprised! This online retailer is starting to carry a lot more cruelty-free brands. Even some of the most popular cruelty-free brands found at Sephora, Ulta, or Nordstrom. For many consumers, big online shops like Dermstore are one of the main places where they purchase cosmetics, skin care, and hair care. It is so helpful to see them carrying more and more cruelty-free brands. Being aware of the cruelty-free brands at Dermstore can be a challenge because there are so many brands available. This list will help make it easier for you! This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on February 8, 2016. All of the cruelty-free brands included here are sold at Dermstore. They are completely cruelty-free and do not take part in any kind of animal testing. Just as with the Cruelty-Free Brand List, it is noted next to a brand if they are owned by a company who tests on animals. It is also noted if they are a 100% vegan brand. The Cruelty-Free Brands at Dermstore are: 100% Pure 21 Drops – 100% vegan Anastasia Beverly Hills Aquis bareMinerals – It should be noted that they are cruelty-free, but […]

Lemon Chocolate Almond Cookie Tartlets

by Liza Mansour @ oh hotcakes

I recently bought a fabulous cookbook called Vegan Chocolate: Unapologetically Luscious and Decadent Dairy-Free Desserts by Fran Costigan. I went into Barnes & Noble ages ago and was eyeing the book for ages so I decided I would finally just go and buy the book. It was worth it, and I couldn’t believe how many recipes in the book I was amazed by. I want to eventually try and make all of them, but this weekend I wanted to give these Lemon Chocolate Ganache Almond Cookie Tartlets a try.  These little beauties do take a while to make, but every minute spent doing it was a new learning experience and I’m glad I made them! The tart cream is very similar to my own cream recipe that I made for my Vanilla Rose Cardamon Filo Mille-Feuille, except these are obviously lemon flavored. I tweaked the original recipe slightly to accommodate for what I had on hand, which I think is great because I wasn’t going to buy agar when cornstarch is a perfectly fine substitute! Make these for your friends and family and I swear they will think you bought them from a fancy French patisserie! Thank you to Fran Costigan for this lovely […]
