The Escape: Abra and Sarah Visit NYC

The Escape: Abra and Sarah Visit NYC

by Belle @ The Work Edit by Capitol Hill Style

This week on The Escape, we talk about dressing for a casual trip to New York City.  Explore Sarah and Abra’s different New York City styles, and get recommendations on where to shop and eat.   Abra’s New York City Style I was a late convert to the glories of New York City, but it’s one of my favorite places.  I try to visit NYC at least once per year (though I’d like to go more often).  My visits often include a mix of visiting friends and dropping by the showrooms of some of my favorite brands.  That means finding the balance between comfort and style. I’m headed to New York next month, and this Pinterest photo is my inspiration.  Comfortable, chic, and perfect for a busy day on the go. Striped Shirtdress. This T by Alexander Wang shirtdress is the perfect three season dress.  You could layer on an olive field jacket or wear it with a pair of simple boots.  Love the dress, but not the price?  Target’s New Day line has a similar dress for $25. Moccasins. I am the biggest fan of moccasins and drivers for walking long distances.  These Coach Frederica loafers were my gateway pair.  The orange pair above, from M.Gemi, are very comfortable and come in wide selection of colors.  Want a trendier option?  Try these incredible Ulla Johnson slides. Cognac Satchel. One of the most versatile bags you can own is a cognac satchel.  It pairs well with summer colors, fall hues, and black.  This Vince Camuto top handle satchel with a wide strap is comfortable for carrying long distances.  For something more ladylike, this Forzieri satchel is a good choice.  Of course, the dream bag is this Mulberry flap and buckle satchel. Big Sunglasses.  A big city essential.  I like my sunglasses in tortoise; it’s less severe than black. Simple Jewelry. After losing a David Yurman ring while traveling, I no longer travel with my good jewelry.  These simple rings–from Elizabeth and James and Mr. Kate–give just enough shine.  I also like these simple disc drops from RL. As for places to visit, even though I hate Italian food (down with tomato-covered carbs), I never miss Eataly.  Even if it’s only for gelato.  My favorite spot for brunch is Jack’s Wife Freda, then I’ll stroll the 10ish blocks north to feast on Doughnut Plant.  And if you want to do some shopping, …

BPGP: Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab - The Work Edit by Capitol Hill Style

BPGP: Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab - The Work Edit by Capitol Hill Style

The Work Edit by Capitol Hill Style

It didn’t take long for gel manicures–with their glossy sheen and long-wear application–to take the beauty world by storm.  Who doesn’t want chip-free polish that can see you through an entire pay period?  But sadly, between the damage that removing the gel does to your nails and the risks associated with UV light exposure, the shine may have come off the nail, so to speak. But what if there was a product that could give you long-wearing polish without all the harsh side effects of a gel manicure? Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab Set ($45) With all the typing that I do in an average day, my manicures never survive more than three or four days without some chipping.  So when a friend told me about Deborah Lippmann’s Gel Lab nail duo, I ran right out to buy it. The system is fairly simple:  You apply a coat of the base coat, and plow that to dry for two minutes.  Then apply two coats of your polish, allowing each to fully dry.  Lastly, you apply the top coat for a glossy finish. In addition to allowing each layer to dry completely, you need to make sure that the base and top coats cover every square millimeter of your nail.  If you miss even a whisper of an edge, that is where the first chip will appear.  So don’t worry about glomming it on, you can always carefully clean up the excess later with some nail polish remover. For those of us who do the at-home manicure, a product like this is a lifesaver.  I do fairly well with my OPI Chip Skip and my Seche Vite Quick Dry Top Coat, but the Gel Lab set buys me at least a few extra chip-free days.  Not a full two weeks mind you, but at least a full week.  And since I so rarely find time to paint my nails anymore, this product helps me make the most of the times when I do.  It’s a bit expensive for a base and top coat, but if you’re saving by polishing at home, I think it’s worth it for a manicure that lasts twice as long. Also, if you like salon manicures, you might consider buying the Gel Lab and asking your manicurist to apply it for you. As for lacquer recommendations, my favorite Lippmann shades are Harem Silks Bombay (a glorious purple), Ruby …

#ProjectUseThemALL July-August 2017 Update

by noreply@blogger.com (Quirky Busy Beauty) @ Quirky, Busy, and Beautiful

Before the laptop death, I was working on my July post, so I'm going to include that info. I made huge strides in August, mostly because I mainly laid off new palettes (I think I bought five- four of the MAC Girls and the ABH Subculture Palette)

July 2017:

I'll readily admit that July was a bit rough for me in terms of #ProjectUseThemALL because I got distracted with all of the new things that I've been playing with and reviewing on the blog. Exactly the opposite of what I was hoping would happen.

Since I've been hauling so many palettes, I wanted to give myself credit. I started with 156 palettes mid-May and I've crept up to 165. And that's not all of the palettes I've gotten (for example, Boxycharm palettes aren't on there!)

Rolling into July, here were our stats (remember, new palettes aren't being counted since it's those currently in my stash I'd like to use!):

Date Project Started: May 15, 2017                 Number of Palettes Currently in Project: 157
Date of Last Update: June 25, 2017                   Number of Palettes Used: 42
Number of Palettes Initially Included: 156        Number of Palettes Remaining: 115

I have to admit that July was a bit of a bust. I didn't meet my goal (getting it under 100), but barely. I was at 102 ending July.

Now, onto August.  I really did well. Saving money did me well.

Date Project Started: May 15, 2017                 Number of Palettes Currently in Project: 165
Date of Last Update: August 28, 2017                   Number of Palettes Used: 87
Number of Palettes Initially Included: 156        Number of Palettes Remaining: 78

There are 122 days between September 1 and December 31. I've got 78 palettes to use. That's 0.63 palettes per day. Let's look at it another way. There are 18 weeks left of 2017. I need to use an average of 4.33 palettes per week. Looking at what's left, I did a bit of sorting:

Neutral/Work Palettes:

NYX Custom Prismatics Palette
Pur Trolls
Revolution Makeup Unicorn Love
Tom Ford Crushed Indigo
Tom Ford Emerald Lust
Too Faced Cat Eyes
Too Faced Rock 'n Roll
Urban Decay Moondust
Urban Decay Urban Spectrum

I think the colorful palettes might be tough for me. Getting through all of those work-friendly palettes will be easy but it's items like the Moondust palette that perplex me. Hmmm... time to go grab one of those crazier ones and pop it on my lids ASAP.
