#nzgirlhacks: Our Top Picks From This Year’s Chocolate & Coffee Show!

by Lidya @ nzgirl

The Chocolate and Coffee Show is on this weekend and we can’t wait! Smooth creamy chocolate, delicious drinks and treats, what’s not to look forward to? Here are some of the exhibitioners we are most excited to see at the show that we think you should see too 😋 Chocolate We are absolutely in love with the chilli hot chocolate Bohemein Chocolate does. Their sea salt caramels are absolutely divine as well! We’ve never tried anything from Honest Chocolat, so a nibble of the award-winning Salted Caramel and Buckwheat Bar is a must. Treats Bailey’s Fudge Kitchen will be presenting and sampling over 30 amazing fudge flavours throughout the show. And they’re all gluten-free! I’ve recently popped by the Fix and Fogg window on Eva Street while I was in Wellington. I have to say, I’m craving more of their delicious peanut butter 😍 Milse is my standard go-to place when I need a decadent treat so of course I’m so excited to see what they’re bringing to the show! The cabinets are all stocked and ready for your Saturday dessert adventures! 🍰 A post shared by Milse Dessert Bar & Patisserie (@milse_britomart) on Aug 11, 2017 at 8:12pm PDT Drinks You must have seen the beautiful pastel blue Storm and India tins around, but did you know the tins contained equally beautiful tea blends? Storm and India teas The photo of the pink beetroot latte from Urban Blends got us craving for some, so we have to grab some at the show! If you love smoothies and juices as much as we do, get some Caliwood straws. Say no to the boring plastic straw and pimp up your drink with their reusable stainless steel straws! If you haven’t gotten tickets, you can get them here! Now you know which stalls we’re hitting up first, what are YOU most excited to see?   #nzgirlhacks

READ WATCH LISTEN: 5 Ways To Spot A Mean Girl

by Lidya @ nzgirl

Do you remember the mean girl from high school? You know the one, she takes every opportunity to lower your self-esteem and she doesn’t even pretend she’s not enjoying it? Classic teen movies are full of these iconic characters; from Regina George in Mean Girls, to Easy A and The Princess Diaries. Now, New Zealand has a mean girl to call our very own with J’ess from awkward high school comedy Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose! Meet Lucy Lewis. Her high school has officially gone weird. When an anonymous Instagrammer hits Hills High all hell breaks loose, and Lucy must battle mean girls, unfair rules and the super scary Principal.   This time, poor Lucy Lewis (Thomasin McKenzie) has to deal with the worst slash best mean girl ever, J’ess (Erana James, who is also starring in upcoming movie The Changeover!). J’ess throws shade, rocks the eighties Goth queen look and is the new standard in which to measure a girl’s meanness. Here are some mean-girl spotting tips Lucy could have done with! 1. Mean girls always have a strong look. Note the eyeliner, the bold berry lips and the perfect resting b***ch face? It’s important to remember, mean girls only every smile on the inside. 2. Her name is as distinctive as her make-up choices. 3. Her deadpan sarcasm knows no bounds. 4. She knows gives a backhanded compliment like a flippin’ pro. 5. And finally, mean girls call it as they see it. We loved the previous season of Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose and season 2 is giving us major throwback vibes to our high school days (whether we enjoyed it or not)! Watch the new series of Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose here, and see Erana James (looking totally different) in The Changeover in cinemas Thursday September 28th! READ WATCH LISTEN

#nzgirlhacks: Why You Need Life Insurance

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Saving money for your family means going over the expenses, your income, and every financial detail of your life with a fine-tooth comb. It’s not easy, and it’s probably going to cause you a little anxiety as you delve into places your money is going, how much you waste, and how much you need to save for the future. When you go over your expenses and decide it’s time to save money, don’t be like the thousands of people who assume they’re fine dropping their life insurance policies. It’s unwise, and financial experts advise against forgoing life insurance.   You Need Life Insurance You do need life insurance if you have a family. If something happens to you and your income is lost, can your family survive? If you are the primary breadwinner in the family, you must carry life insurance. Even if you don’t bring in any money for your family, you do provide a role. Do you have kids? If you stay home with them so your family doesn’t pay for school, daycare, after-school care, or babysitters while you work, you’re saving your family a lot of money every month. If something happened to you, who would care for your kids while your spouse is at work? Can your spouse afford to send your kids to school or daycare or camp while he or she works? You might not provide financial income to the family, but you do provide very important financial help to the family despite not receiving a paycheck every other week or so. Financial experts also remind consumers it’s not easy to get a good life insurance policy the older you good. If you decide to drop the policy you’ve carried for years, you’re never getting it back. The next one you get might be far more expensive, far less beneficial, and nothing like the one you have now. It’s easier to get good insurance for a good rate when you’re young and healthy. Are you still young and healthy? Think about that when you decide you’re saving money by ditching your life insurance policy. How to Save Money on Life Insurance If you really need to cut the bills in half or more, you need to consider a bundled policy. Get online or start making calls for car insurance quotes that also bundle your home and life insurance policies. Bundle discounts are available for those who choose to carry all their policies in the same place, and that’s a big saving each year. Additionally, if you make the decision to pay your premium upfront rather than monthly, you save a monthly fee as well as an automatic payment fee, and you get a discount for being a good customer. Talk to your insurance agent about the many ways you can save money on your insurance. Many of them are surprising, but that doesn’t mean they’re unwelcome. Savings are nice, and sometimes all you have to do is ask about it. You can compare insurance quotes until you find the policy that best fits your needs and your financial situation, and that’s how you save. You might find your current company is desperate to keep you, and they’ll offer more substantial discounts if they feel you might leave. Life insurance is the way your family survives when you are gone. It’s the kind of subject you never want to discuss, but it’s the kind of subject you must discuss. You can’t avoid this topic of conversation, and you certainly don’t want your family strapped financially and potentially change their entire lifestyle as they are dealing with losing you. Protect yourself and your family with a good life insurance policy. You need it, and your family needs it. It seems like a waste since you’re not really using it, but it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Don’t cancel it no matter how badly you need to save money.   #nzgirlhacks

101 things in 1001 days has a certain ring to it. After seeing many others do versions of this I couldn’t help but create one for myself. It’s like a 3 year long bucket list (well, slightly under 3 years) of things I would like to achieve or experience before August 22nd 2018. I have […]

Enough now

by homestyle magazine @ homestyle

Simple and sophisticated is the name of the game around here, and the well-played restraint really pays off. Growing up, Amy de Court had little interest in the world of interiors. Her mother, a graduate of Nanette Cameron’s School of Interior Design, kept a beautiful home, which Amy was vaguely aware of, but Amy took the path to studying industrial and organisational psychology instead. It wasn’t until she bought her first house and had kids of her own that a latent desire to create a living environment that was calm and collected surfaced. Now that Sofia and George are at kindergarten, Amy’s finishing her third year of part-time study at, you guessed it, the very same institute her mother attended. The Herne Bay, Auckland villa that Amy and her husband Geoff Long moved into two years ago is evidence of her aim to bring simplicity to the fore. “We fell in love with its gorgeous street presence, elevation from the road, high ceilings and wonderful connection to the back garden,” says Amy. Inside, the structural …

Before Your First Brazilian or Bikini Wax

TMI time: this weekend, I got my first Brazilian wax ever. Actually, it was my first wax ever, period. Sharing links

by @ Databases - Articles

IP.Board 3.1 introduces a new feature that is available for any application to make use of: sharing links. IP.Content makes use of this feature in the custom databases (and articles) modules to allow you to more easily expose your content to a wider audience.

Along with supporting sharing of your content with third party services such as Facebook and Twitter, you can now also send an article via email, print the article, and download the article easily by clicking the appropriate icon under the article body. The additional printing and downloading features allow the content to be shared, online as well as offline.

Within the articles module specifically, the article image that you upload when posting the article (optionally) will automatically be flagged for use with Facebook when someone uses Facebook to share the link. This ensures that the correct image is the one Facebook displays to other users. Similarly, we pull out an appropriate extract of textual content for Facebook to use as well. If the user is logged in to Twitter or Facebook, sharing the content becomes even easier, not requiring you to even leave the site.

We hope that by providing tools to make it easier to share content on your site, your content will be exposed to a wider audience, bringing you more traffic and making your content more easily and readily available to the world.

Find indeed

by homestyle magazine @ homestyle

At Here Among the Wild, the whimsical foraged ingredients aren’t told who’s boss – they’re allowed to have a say. And we like the way they think. No two bouquets created at Here Among the Wild’s Herne Bay, Auckland store are ever the same – how could they be, with co-owners Yolande Palmer and Chantelle Rodrigo at the helm? The pair share a love for the serendipitous and are content to let the flowers’ form dictate the construction of their arrangements, though that’s not to say they don’t also inject their own touch of the unexpected. “We’re about poetic expression,” says Yolande. Since opening their flower shop late last year, the talented twosome have gained a reputation for creating abundant displays made with unusual botanical ingredients. So much so that locals frequently turn up at their door with their own interesting finds, from storm-blown branches to wild hops. When did you begin working with flowers? YOLANDE: I’ve always worked with flowers and had bunches in whatever spaces I live in. What propelled it even further …

Template Management

by @ Miscellaneous - Articles

In the IP.Content ACP, you will notice that there are 3 separate template sections of the ACP:

  • Block Templates
  • Page Templates
  • Database Templates
  • Article Templates
Within each templates section, you can create containers to group your templates into logical groupings. For instance, you may wish to create a grouping for each database you create, and then place the database templates appropriately into the container representing the database itself. Or you may wish to create multiple front page templates, and group them all together in the article templates area. You can use containers for whatever purposes you may have, or not at all: it's up to you!

Templates can be reordered by dragging and dropping the rows up and down, and they can be moved from one container to another via drag n drop as well.

Certain meta data about the templates are stored when you create new database or article templates, allowing IP.Content to tailor other areas of the ACP to help you out. For example, the software stores the template type when you create a new template. This allows us to show only "category listing" templates in the "category listing template" selection dropdowns. Similarly, the template tag help panel can automatically know which template type you are editing without you having to specify.

Properly making use of templates can help you push out pages on your site in a uniform manner quickly and easily, and without having to "reinvent the wheel" each time a new page is ready to be published.

#nzgirlhacks: 5 Common Food Traps For Your Health, From Dr Libby

by Lidya @ nzgirl

Spring cleaning your house and life? Why not spring clean your health with Dr Libby as well! Australasia’s leading nutritional biochemist Dr Libby tells us what the top 5 things people do that damage their attempts to be healthy. Plus, win tickets to see Dr Libby in real life and a copy of her best-selling book What Am I Supposed To Eat?. Just comment below which food trap you fall into the most!   Five common food traps that lead us away from good health 1. Inhaling your food So many people inhale their food these days, whether they’re eating on the run, in a rush to get back to their to-do list, or simply distracted (ever eaten an entire packet of crisps in front of the TV without even noticing?). We need to slow down and chew our food properly – there are no teeth beyond the mouth! Aside from breaking down our food, chewing sends a signal to the stomach that food is on its way, allowing it to prepare for optimal digestion. 2. Thinking you can burn off poor food choices No amount of exercise can burn off the effects of a poor-quality way of eating. I have met thousands of people who exercise frequently (and with intensity), especially after making poor food choices with the intention of ‘burning off’ the calories they consumed the day before. But the calorie equation (calories in versus calories burned) doesn’t take into account the biochemical and hormonal effects of our food choices. There is nothing in the world that can replace a highly nutritious way of eating. 3. Drinking water with meals For the most effective digestion, we need the pH of our stomach acid to sit at around 2. Water has a pH of 7 (neutral) or greater so drinking water with your meal has the potential to dilute the stomach acid. If the stomach isn’t acidic enough, you may not be able to extract all of the nutrients from your food optimally and you may also experience digestive symptoms such as bloating. Drink water between meals rather than with your meals. 4. Listening to external sources rather than your own body With so many nutrition experts sharing information and the rise of social media ‘influencers’, we are exposed to so many (often conflicting!) messages about what to eat and what not to eat. Experts play a role – of course. Yet, when you look for answers externally and take someone else’s well-meaning, but possibly inaccurate nutrition advice as gospel, you are essentially disregarding your own inner wisdom. I have seen this time and time again with people continuing to eat foods they have been told are “healthy”, despite their body sending them clear signals that these foods aren’t right for them. I’m not for a second denying that many people would benefit from nutrition education and guidance, but at the end of the day, know that your body is your best barometer when it comes to what best nourishes you. 5. Using unhelpful food language Food isn’t ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘healthy’, ‘unhealthy’ or ‘clean’. It is nutritious – or not. Humans are healthy, or they aren’t. And the more nutritious food we eat, the healthier we will be. When we talk about food in terms of nourishment, we look at what we’re getting from our food and how it’s feeding our cells. It’s an entirely different conversation and helps to establish a great relationship with food. Dr Libby just released her new book, What Am I Supposed to Eat? and is will be bringing her live event Food Frustration to 17 centres around New Zealand. Comment below which food trap you fall into the most and you might be one of 3 winners of a copy of What Am I Supposed to Eat? and a double passes to see Dr Libby LIVE! Winners will drawn September 16th so tell your friends! #nzgirlhacks

Driving Freedom: How to Save Money on That Next Car Purchase

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Buying a car is a major, financial commitment for most people. You might be driving a car that’s a decade old or more right now. It’s time for a change, but the purchasing process is intimidating. In today’s car industry, there are many options that make the purchasing process easier than ever. Learn some of the insider secrets to scoring a spectacular deal on the car of your dreams. Simple tips can drive the price downward in a matter of minutes.   Try Online Sales Walking onto a dealership’s lot isn’t necessary today when you have the Internet to supplement your purchasing process. Save money on your next car by looking for deals online. Many dealerships will list certain cars that have been on the lot for several months. They want to move their inventory so the price is incredibly low. Print out this sale or save it to your smartphone. Bring it to the dealership so that you can see the vehicle in person. Because the price is set at an incredibly low level, there’s very little haggling that’s necessary.   Consider an Alternative Color If you look at the cars on the road today, white and black vehicles tend to dominate the world. These popular colors are well-known to dealerships so they set the prices high as a result. Alternative colors, such as blue or brown, don’t move as quickly from the lot as the everyday hues. Dealerships are more willing to give you a deal on these vehicles so be open to the varied colors. Settle on a low price that only encourages you to drive a unique car.   Shop Late Car salespeople are constantly looking at the bottom line. There are sales goals for each weekday and month. Consider a visit to the dealer near the end of the day on the 31st of the month. Because the dealer wants to make a deal to finish off the month with a healthy profit, the salesperson is more open to negotiation. Ask if there are any promotions that sweeten the deal during negotiations too, such as floor mats, an e cigarette starter kit, or maybe an Ipad. Some of the most unusual requests become part of the final sale as closing time nears.   Skip the Superfluous Extras It’s a fact that dealers will try to sell you numerous extras as the final papers are being signed. Avoid the addition of extended warranties and sealants. They’re simply not cost effective in the long run. Your factory warranty covers most of the issues that you’ll face in the coming years. The factory paint job is also high quality so sealing it is only a cosmetic choice. Avoiding the extras will save hundreds of dollars at the signing table.   Get Pre-Approved A simple way to save money on a car is by beating them at their own financial game. Go to your bank and get pre-approved for a car loan. Be aware of the loan amount and interest rate. When it comes time to talk about financing, you have a starting point for the negotiations. In most cases, the dealership wants your financing business so they’ll match the pre-approved amount.   Avoid Monthly Payment Amounts As you haggle over the vehicle’s price, don’t discuss monthly payments. This tactic is a classic way to confuse the consumer. Discuss the car’s total price or drive-off amount. Negotiate off of this price so that there’s no confusion over costs. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for as a result of these negotiation tactics.   Always remember that you haven’t committed to any purchase until the documents are signed. Don’t feel obligated to complete a sale. If the process isn’t in your favor, you have every right to walk out of the door. Car salespeople will work on your psychology, but you don’t have to give in. You dictate the terms on your next purchase. Stay strong, and a good deal will present itself in time.

Template Variables Help

by @ Miscellaneous - Articles

When you edit content in IP.Content, whether it be blocks, templates or pages, there are many built in tags that you will need to or want to utilize in order to generate the content appropriately. Blocks have variables containing data that may be of use to your users. Page templates have variables that perform important functions, such as inserting the page title or marking where the page content should be displayed. It is nearly impossible to simply remember every variable that can be utilized in your pages and templates.

IP.Content features a template tag help panel that you can use to alleviate this problem. The panel can be minimized if you don't need it (and your preference is remembered so you won't have to minimize it each time you load a new template to edit). The panel is tabbed, providing you with various tag options based on the specific content you are editing. Database templates will show you the database tags you will need to use, while blocks will show you the variables being passed into the block template. You are able navigate some of the tabs when necessary in order to better determine the appropriate variables for the specific area you are editing.

A small icon is shown next to each tag, and clicking this icon will insert it into your templates automatically wherever the cursor is blinking. You need not manually copy and paste the tag - simply click to insert!

Some tags will have additional information or perhaps a relevant example of the data it represents. These tags will have an arrow indicator next to them to let you know that you can click on the arrow to view further details about that specific tag.

This panel is always available and dynamically adjusts to the type of content you are editing. It is but one small feature available in IP.Content designed to help you build your site the way you want, as efficiently as possible.

Navigation Menu

by @ Templates - Articles

IP.Content 2.3 includes a new feature designed to help you build your forums and website out the way you want to: control over your primary navigational menu.

The primary navigation menu is the the "tab" bar across the top of the page that includes links to each major section of your site. IP.Board builds this automatically based on the applications you have installed, but when you use IP.Content, you will likely find yourself creating new pages that you wish you could quickly link to in that same bar. It is possible to edit your skin templates manually to accomplish this, but this presents a few problems:

  • Your template edits may need to be reverted when upgrading in the future in order to inherit updates in the skin in future releases.
  • You will have to determine the logic necessary to show the tab as "lit up" when someone is viewing that page (and to ensure other tabs do not appear to be lit up).
  • It is inconvenient repeating this process each time a new page is created.
This is no longer a problem with IP.Content 2.3. You can now visit the "Navigation Menu" page available under the Settings module in the IP.Content ACP area and build tabs through an easy to use interface. You can control what order your tabs display in, and even put them before or in between default application tabs. You can control almost every aspect of the tab from the title, the textual tooltip, any additional non-default attributes (for instance, including a javascript click handler that will log the click in an analytics program) and more. You can even create submenus that will display on click or on hover, including many links underneath one tab.

You can also modify many aspects of your default application tabs as well, going beyond what IP.Board offers by default. For instance, using this tool you can add additional attributes to your application tabs, change the title, and modify the textual tooltip shown when a user hovers over the tab.

The best part about this new feature - IP.Content automatically figures out which tab to light up without any extra work on your part!

We hope this new feature in IP.Content 2.3 helps you better control your site the way you want it to be.

Whether you’re socialising, working or Netflix bingeing, it’s a space that needs to work effortlessly. Here’s how we recommend you lay the foundations to fulfil your household’s every need: 1 Pick your pieces. The largest item in the room, your couch should be well-considered. We’re big fans of modular sofas, as you can move the elements around to suit the occasion. We used two modular pieces from Città’s Eve sofa range to create a large L – an ideal composition for delineating a living area in an open-plan space. 2 Plan your palette. Page Management

by @ Pages - Articles

The page management module interface has many powerful tools built in, designed to help you work with pages and folders in IP.Content efficiently.

Firstly, the folder navigation utilizes AJAX to load the folder contents inline without requiring you to visit a new page to view the contents of the folder.

We have also updated some common management features to utilize AJAX to help facilitate management of your pages. Actions like clearing folders and deleting folders, for instance, will now occur without page refreshes, making your managerial activities flow smoother and quicker.

Additionally, the interface as a whole has been updated to provide a nicer, smoother feel for the page management areas. In practice, we found that many administrators spend the majority of their time setting up and utilizing IP.Content in the page management areas, so we wanted to update the user interface to make this experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. Minor details like confirmation dialogs have been updated to bring everything together for a more consistent feel.

A new filter bar, utilizing AJAX to retrieve the results without the need for a page refresh, has also been added to the page management area. You can begin typing in the name of a page and a live-search action will occur in the background, showing you the results of your search as you type. If you have many pages and many folders (and many pages within those many folders), you will find that using the filter bar to locate your pages can dramatically speed up your navigation of IP.Content within the page management areas of the ACP.

Overall, we've modernized the IP.Content page management area of the ACP, polishing up the little details, in an effort to make your experience all the more pleasant.

Promoting Posts to Articles

by @ Forum Integration - Articles

IP.Content allows you to promote posts from your forums to articles in the IP.Content Articles database.

The administrator can configure the specifics of this feature in the ACP under My Apps -> IP.Content -> Promote Article Settings. You can turn the system on and off, control which groups can copy and move posts to the articles section, and specify a few other details for the feature. A new hook is included with IP.Content which adds a button to each post labeled "Promote to Article". This button only shows up if you have permission to use the feature based on the ACP configuration.

When clicked, the button will take you to a new form where you can formalize the details of the new article. You can tweak the text and title, upload an image, and specify other pertinent details. If you are able to both move and copy posts to the articles section, you will also be asked which type of promotion you wish to use. Upon submitting the form, IP.Content handles the rest.

This new feature can be used to showcase important content otherwise hidden in your forums by pushing this content to your frontpage. It is then up to you whether you want a copy made in the articles section (leaving the original post in tact), whether you want to actually move the post to the articles section, and whether you want any cross-linking left in place. With such powerful options, we are sure you will find many uses for this great tool available in IP.Content.

Go with the flow

by homestyle magazine @ homestyle

This family dwelling has a wonderful ease to it that was well worth the wait. Like a good cup of coffee, Rebecca and Paul Hawthorn gave the redesign of their Auckland home time to percolate. The couple spent five years imagining how to transform its 1970s layout to meet the needs of modern family life, until last year, when they were ready to begin the major makeover, stripping the two-storey home of its dated features, switching the living area from upstairs to ground level and adding a new pavilion-style wing. “The layout was all wrong for how we wanted to live,” says Rebecca. “The main living was upstairs, which was a nightmare when the kids were little because they always wanted to be outside and it was difficult to keep an eye on them from inside.” Rebecca and Paul have created their own private oasis. “I really wanted the home to have a flow from the inside out,” says Rebecca. Previously the living area was positioned to take advantage of the harbour views. One of the …

5 Reasons You Should Eat Kind This October (And Forever)

by Bridie @ nzgirl

In partnership with SAFE’s Eat Kind month in October Bridie Chetwin-Kelly our resident vegan talks us through the reasons why eating kind is awesome. More often than not people tend to think that being vegetarian or vegan is about eating tofu and kale and calling it a day. That’s not all you’re doing. Eating kind is about saving the environment, animals, your health and eating like you give a damn. 5 Reasons Why Eating Kind is Awesome  The health benefits People who eat kind are actually on to something when it comes to health. With the right diet and understanding what vital nutrients your body needs to survive, you could be the ideal picture of health. By removing animal products from diets, you are reducing your risk of having heart disease and cancer As for dairy, the lactose in milk can cause some serious discomfort and leafy greens, broccoli and beans are far better sources to get calcium. Save the planet, one plate at a time The numbers are in and a number of resources used to farm agriculture is completely destroying the planet. In the time it takes you to read this 4 football fields of a forest is being cleared for farming. Our clean green image in New Zealand is at risk of animal effluent making our water toxic and contaminated. Not to mention what effects farming releases large amounts of emissions and has a significant impact on climate change. You could save a life or a hundred Would you still be able to eat meat if slaughterhouses had windows? By going meat-free you could save over 96 animals a year or up to 198 animals a year if you go vegan.. Normalising eating cruelty-free is what Eat Kind is about and by removing the questions around it we can begin to accept it as a new normal. What’s the difference between a dog and a cow? It’s just plain pretty to eat plant-based Just look up vegan on Instagram and you will see just how beautiful the food looks. New Zealand has come a really long way with being vegetarian and vegan-friendly as well. If you are at a loss or think it’s going to be difficult to go out and eat, you couldn’t be more wrong. Thanks to Happycow.net you can look up your area and go to tried and tested restaurants and cafes. I can hand on heart say that I have been to countless vegan-friendly places across the entirety of New Zealand. Portershed in Christchurch, Botanist in Wellington and The Burgerie in Auckland are only a couple of examples!  The Burgerie also now boasts the best vegan burger in the whole of New Zealand. Check out @Veganeaaats and @Accidentallyvegannz for even more unbelievable vegan food! My office buddies sure know how to throw a send off with a (tasty) bang 💘🎉 Gorgeous #vegan raspberry and coconut cake from @thecaker for my goodbye morning tea. Those flowers tho 😱👏🏻 A post shared by @accidentallyvegannz on Jul 20, 2017 at 1:29pm PDT Education around this has been made easy The education around this hot issue has never been easier and a number of documentaries out there are ever growing. I recommend, Earthlings for a sombre and heart-breaking look into what and how animals are used and abused. Be warned, it will break you… Cowspiracy has been deemed the shocking film that environmental organisations don’t want you to see. It’s about what is actually going to be sustainable for our planet. Lastly, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood is about educating people on the topic of climate change with a big focus on agricultural farming and the pace in which humans consume meat. Bonus, you get to look at Leo for a full movie. SAFE is encouraging people to at the very least, give it a go for the month of October and has plenty of resources on their website to make the transition an easy one. Save the planet, save the animals and give compassionate eating a go. READ, WATCH, LISTEN

A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Organic Food

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Looking Underneath the Organic Food Market The organic food sector is growing. Many studies and their findings show that our conventional food is contaminated with chemicals and herbicides, and that contamination leads to diseases, tumors, mental illnesses and major chronic problems. Organically grown crops are not just better for our health but for the quality of the soil that provides the nutrients to our food.   What Is Considered Organic? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program has strict guidelines for becoming certified as an organic producer. Basically, produce grown without using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or ionizing radiation can be certified as organic. In animal products, the meat, dairy and eggs are produced without using growth hormones or antibiotics. Also taken into consideration are the protection of natural resources, biodiversity conservation and only using approved substances. This means a lot of testing for adherence to the guidelines, not to mention checking soil, water, contamination from neighboring fields and constant monitoring to approve products and get that seal from the USDA.   Is Organic Food Safer and More Nutritious? The Mayo Clinic confirms that evidence continues to show the potential benefits to health of organic compared to conventionally grown foods. Moderate increases in nutrients, higher levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, lower toxic cadmium levels in grains and lower levels of residue from pesticides are some of the noticeable differences that contribute to overall health. Without additives, preservatives and GMOs, it stands to reason that food grown organically is safer, but the difference in nutritional value is very difficult to prove. Too many variables affecting nutrients in seeds, harvesting, handling and type of soil make research unreliable. However, peer-reviewed journals are finding higher nutritional values. An example in one study shows organic tomatoes having higher levels of phytochemicals and vitamin C than conventionally grown ones. It doesn’t mean organic labelling is healthy eating. Additives to so-called organic items like snacks, cakes and pre-packaged food can be detrimental to our health. Read the labels.   Why Does Organic Food Cost More? Due to the time-intensive processes that smaller organic farms use and the diligent care that is needed, prices are typically higher. Federal subsidies are not given to organic farmers as they are to large, conventional farms. Environmental cleanup, that sometimes takes years, isn’t reflected in conventional growing. Also, the stringent guidelines, checked often, takes more management. There are ways to get organic food and stick to a budget. The larger stores are starting to stock more and that brings the prices down. Things like breads, cereals and grains that are labeled organic are relatively the same price as conventional. Shopping around, cooking more at home and buying frozen or in bulk can save money as well. Another option becoming popular are low carb meal plans. Boxes of organic produce are specifically made up for a particular meal containing all the ingredients so no shopping is needed.   What’s So Good About Organic? It’s not just about the food we eat. The most overlooked topic is underneath the food we grow. The soil has been over-processed and isn’t given time to build up nutrients. The chemicals used to kill weeds and bugs goes into the soil and into the food we eat. The wind carries these sprays into other fields and contaminates perfectly healthy soil. Animal welfare is important for a delicious, bacteria and hormone-free piece of meat or fish. Caring for the environment and making crops sustainable will provide sustenance for our future generations.   Providing for our children and their children should be a priority. Helping sustain the small farmer who is doing everything he/she can to grow healthier, tastier and more organic food seems like a dream. The more demand for quality produce, the lower the prices. All these things contribute to viewing organic produce as the better alternative.

READ WATCH LISTEN: The Changeover Is The Perfect Coming-Of-Age Movie

by Lidya @ nzgirl

The best way I would describe The Changeover is a coming-of-age arthouse supernatural fantasy thriller-ish movie. A lot of words, but it is only because there are so many layers to the film. Sixteen year-old Laura Chant lives with her mother and four-year-old brother Jacko on the edge of earthquake-scarred Christchurch, New Zealand. Laura is drawn into a supernatural battle with an ancient spirit who attacks Jacko and slowly drains the life out of him. Laura discovers her true identity and the supernatural ability within her, and must harness it to save her brother's life. It captivated me straight from the start. The first scene (shown below) perfectly captured the awkwardness of wanting to be a carefree child but having the responsibilities of an adult. New Zealanders and co-producers Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie chose to set the movie in post-quake Christchurch. To me, post-quake Christchurch reflected what was going in in Laura’s world. She was trying to deal with the disaster of her father leaving and the responsibility of taking care of Jacko while trying to be a normal teenager. And of course, with teenagers, there has to be some sort of parental conflict. Melanie Lynskey plays Laura’s mum, an over-worked bookshop employee who often neglects her maternal duties. Tension between the mother-daughter duo reminded me of my arguments with my mother, with the similar lines of ‘Where were you? Who are you texting?’ and my old favourite line ‘You don’t listen to me’. Oh those angst years! Oh man. My goodness. I swear Timothy Spall just has a special talent for playing the creepy villain! There was the right amount of nail-biting and face covering and don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! The person next to me told me after the movie that she knew exactly when the jumps were coming by the number of times I cursed under my breath (which is hilarious!). But the movie can’t be classified as a horror film. The person on the other side of me was a 13 year old girl and she was not scared. At all. To be honest, I’m not great with horror/thrillers, but I would not suggest bring children under age 13 with you. Now let’s talk about romance, because there is major chemistry between Laura and Sorenson. Sorenson gave me a very strong vibe that reminded me of Edward from Twilight. Kinda awkward, wanting to help, slightly dark with a good heart. Of course, the physical similarities help too! If you have read the Carnegie-medal classic by Margaret Mahy that the film is based on, don’t expect it to be exactly the same. While the book hasn’t aged and still has relevant themes to modern life, the producers wanted to really appeal to teenagers now.  The Changeover will make you laugh, will definitely make you cry. It is a must-see. Out in cinemas September 28th in a cinema near you.

What Is A Frontpage?

by @ Articles - Articles

IP.Content 2.0 uses the term "frontpage" to refer to both the homepage of the Articles module, and the landing page of each individual category. We have introduced this new navigational structure to better allow you to showcase content, while presenting it in a standardized format that your users will be able to understand and jump into without assistance.

Firstly, you will now be able to define "frontpage" templates in the ACP for the Articles module. IP.Content will ship with 3 defaults:

  • 1x2x2 Layout
This layout will display articles in a traditional "news" style layout.
  • Blog format
This format will display articles in a blog-style format.
  • Single column
This layout will force articles to display in a single column, one per row.
You can use one or more of these frontpage layouts, or you can create your own. Experiment with displaying articles in different formats on your homepage to determine which layout your users like best.

Articles must be set to "Show on front page" in order for them to display on the homepage frontpage.

In addition to the homepage frontpage, each category has it's own frontpage. The category frontpage functions identically to the homepage frontpage, except for two important factors:
  • Only records from within that category (and it's subcategories) will be displayed
  • The "Show on front page" setting is not honored for the category frontpage
You will be able to easily review and manage the articles set to display on the frontpage from a new section of the ACP labeled "Frontpage Manager". We feel that this new area of the articles section will help showcase important articles and increase user interaction with your articles section.

3. Prize Drawing: All qualified Submissions will be judged by a panel designated by Prize Provider who are members of MakeupTalk's senior editorial team with expertise in marketing and online promotions. The Submissions will be judged according to the following equally weighted factors: (i) clarity; (ii) creativity; (iii) the degree to which the entry is informed and appropriate. The decisions of the judges will be final. A Submission must be an original work of entrant's own creation and must not have been entered in any other competition. A Submission may not violate the intellectual property or proprietary rights of other parties.

Entrant represents and warrants that any Submission is entrant's own original work and does not infringe the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party, including, without limitation, any third party copyrights or trademarks. Consequently, Prize Provider and, MakeupTalk, shall have all rights to copy, edit, publicly display, publicly perform, broadcast, publish and use, in whole or in part, any Submission and any other intellectual property protected or protectable materials submitted by entrant, in any manner without further compensation during and after the Contest Period. Nothing herein shall constitute an employment, joint venture, or partnership relationship between entrant and Prize Provider, and MakeupTalk.

4. Prizes and Odds: The prizes to be awarded from the Contest are as set forth below:

1. Three Makeup Palette's provided by Deck of Scarlett, valued at $29.95 each.

The odds of winning a prize depend on the total number of eligible entries received. No cash or substitution of prizes is permitted, except at the sole option of Sponsor for a prize of equal or greater value. Prize Provider will not replace any lost or stolen prizes.

5. Notification of Winners: Judging will take place on or about March 17, 2017. Each potential prize winner will be notified by private message or email to the email address associated with his or her MakeupTalk account profile from which the Submission was made on March 17, 2017. Without limiting any other terms of these Official Rules, if a potential winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, OR fails to claim a prize by March 24, 2017, the potential winner(s) will be disqualified and forfeit their right to a prize, and an alternate winner will be selected from remaining valid, eligible Submissions timely submitted. In the event of a dispute regarding who submitted a Submission, the Submission will be deemed submitted by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the MakeupTalk account profile from which the Submission was made. "Authorized account holder" is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.

6. General Rules: By entering the Contest, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules. Prize Provider and any Internet access providers, each of their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and all of their agents, officers, directors, shareholders, employees and agents (collectively, Released Parties) disclaim any responsibility for incorrect or inaccurate Submission of Submission information, human error, technical malfunctions, lost / delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, line failures of any telephone network, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof, inability to access any web site or download materials, damage to a user's computer system (hardware and software) due to participation in the Contest, or late, lost or incomplete Submissions (including entry information). Prize Provider reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify or suspend the Contest in whole or in part, in the event of fraud, technical or other difficulties or if the integrity of the Contest is compromised, without liability to entrants. Prize Provider reserves the right to disqualify any entrant or winner, as determined by Prize Provider, in its sole discretion. Any attempt to deliberately damage any web site or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is unlawful and subject to legal action by the Prize Provider or its designees.

Entrants further agree to release, indemnify, defend and hold the Released Parties, harmless, from any and all claims, injuries, damages, expenses or losses to person or property and/or liabilities of any nature that in any way arise from participation in the Contest or acceptance or use of a prize or parts thereof, including without limitation (i) any condition caused by events beyond Sponsor's control that may cause the Contest to be disrupted or corrupted; (ii) any injuries, losses, or damages (compensatory, direct, incidental, consequential or otherwise) of any kind arising in connection with or as a result of the prize, or acceptance, possession, or use of the prize, or from participation in the Contest; and (iii) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest.

In no event will Prize Provider or Makeuptalk be liable to you for any direct, special, incidental, exemplary, punitive or consequential damages (including loss of use, data, business or profits) arising out of or in connection with your participation in the Contest, whether such liability arises from any claim based upon contract, warranty, tort (including negligence), strict liability or otherwise, and whether or not Sponsor HAS been advised of the possibility of such loss or damage. Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitation or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

7. Additional Conditions: Except where prohibited, by participating in the Contest, entrant consents to the use of his/her name, photo and/or likeness, biographical information, entry and statements attributed to entrant (if true) for advertising and promotional purposes, including without limitation, inclusion in Prize Provider's newsletters, on Prize Provider's, and MakeupTalk's websites and social networking webpages without additional compensation. All entries, as applicable, become property of Prize Provider and none will be acknowledged or returned.

Cassels & Sons Donate to Clown Doctors

by Gemma Dixon @ The Tannery Christchurch

Late last year Cassels & Sons came up with an initiative to raise funds for the charitable organisation Clown Doctors New Zealand, by donating a portion of all Christmas function bookings made from September 1st until Christmas. Clown Doctors New Zealand work in hospitals in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, striving to create a positive atmosphere […]

Here comes the sun

by homestyle magazine @ homestyle

When we visited Sarah and Danny Carlsen, the owners of our cover home (page 68), we were struck by the light and love that fills their recently renovated Auckland bungalow. As New Zealanders are wont to do, the couple have opened the rear of their house to the great outdoors and transformed the kitchen and dining area into their home’s beating heart; this is where all the family action takes place, from preparing and enjoying meals to entertaining friends. We were charmed by the casual vibe of their mismatched chairs and the pared-back chic of their custom-made shelving, as well as the wonderful openness of their living space. The Carlsens’ home exemplifies how many of us like to live, and in fact, all of the homes we profile this issue let the outside in, whether via a deck or large picture windows, as in the treehouse-like abode on page 94 and the coastal cottage on page 108. If you’re an urban dweller looking to inject a bit of nature into your life, we’ve got you …

The End

by noreply@blogger.com (Jessie Mills) @ Nailed It NZ

Five and a half years ago, Nailed It NZ begun. What started as a hobby grew quickly into a passion; one that I believed would never die. I daydreamed about where I would take it, and adamantly stated that I'd still be painting cartoon characters on my nails in my retirement. Every new follower was a thrill - and then I started getting things to review! It went from strength to strength, and I was blown away as my followers went from ten to 10,000, to where it is now at a combined following of over 200,000. I trained as a nail technician. I won competitions, met celebrities, threw myself off the Auckland Harbour Bridge on live radio. I've met friends for life, developed a brush and file line... and that takes me to where I am now.

While summed up in a quick paragraph, it all sounds great; but in reality I've spent five years of weekends and late nights cooped up in whatever space I've allowed for my nail art. It always had to come first, and when you allow 4-6 hours for filming, 4-8 hours for editing and several more hours for promotion, there isn't a lot of weekend left. Often I'd finally complete my to-do list, and triumphantly announce that my weekend has now begun... only to realise it was now 5pm on a Sunday. It took me a long time to settle into Auckland, with a key factor being that my recreational time was limited.

And the funny thing is, despite all this, I was fine. The passion for nails withheld so much! I could write a book on everything I experienced and the good and bad sides of humanity I saw along the way - but the love of nail art remained strong.

Until, it didn't.

I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I know the last few months have been a real confirmation of it. I kept trying to reinvigorate it, thinking it was just a phase; but the reality is that I'm just not that interested in nail art any more.

It's not coincidental that this coincides with the growth of my "normal" career. I'm an early childhood teacher, and for the last year I've been fortunate to be in an amazing job with inspiring leaders and a strong career path. I love going to work, I love being around people, laughing, having fun, planning the future, developing my professional and personal skills. I love the kids I work with, and my colleagues are pretty amazing as well. Sitting at home, alone, editing video after video, blog post after blog post no longer has any appeal to me.

The funny thing is, I always thought I'd be upset when I eventually wrapped this up, but I'm not at all. My husband and I are about to embark on a whole new chapter of our lives; making big life decisions and facing new challenges, and I don't want to start them clinging on to old dreams. It's time for new ones.

This means that I'll no longer be updating Nailed It NZ on any platform, and my shop will shut on Thursday the 28th September 2017 at 11.59pm. All of my accounts on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc will still stay active, and of course can still be used to help you out for ideas and techniques.

I hope this isn't too much of a let down for those amazing people who have been so supportive for such a long time. Believe me, I will never forget your names; your kind words and love of my work really made a difference. But all good things come to an end - or else how can we make room for the great things?

I'm going all-out for a short closing down sale - everything is 50% off at shopnaileditnz.com. The last day for ordering is Thursday 28 September (remember, I'm in New Zealand), and I'll be canceling my shop subscription at the end of the month. If you really want some brushes or files at a later date, you can email me - use my naileditnztutorials@gmail.com one - the other one I'll probably get redirected as it has a cost associated with it.

Again, thank you. I'm so happy I went on this journey and it's taught me so much. I can't wait to see what the next chapter in my life brings.

Jessie

Navigation Menu

by @ Miscellaneous - Articles

Promoting Posts to Articles

by @ Articles - Articles

The Designers Institute’s Best Awards showcase excellence in graphic, spatial, product, interactive and motion design. Check out some of the fine finalists, then find the winners in our December/January issue, out on November 20. Residential interior finalist: BSK Penthouse by Huset A contemporary refurbishment, similar to that of a New York loft, was given to the interior of this spacious inner-city penthouse for clients who needed a space to use both as a private sanctuary and a space in which to entertain 10 or more guests on a frequent basis. The large open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas are cleverly zoned visually by bespoke ceiling panels that define each space. The framework was complemented by the use of brass detailing, dark furnishings and luxurious floor coverings to accentuate each space. The kitchen in particular was positioned to reflect the cityscape and skyline, so that all diners have the benefit of the view. An unused dining room was disguised behind the main kitchen and reconfigured into a spacious scullery and laundry, fully equipped as a second working kitchen. Natural elements such …

Sharing links

by @ Miscellaneous - Articles

Store Comments In Forum

by @ Forum Integration - Articles

With IP.Content articles and custom databases you can mirror a topic to the forums when a new article or database record is submitted. In doing so, IP.Content can also utilize that automatically-generated topic as the comment "storage" for the article or record. When a comment is submitted to the article, the comment is actually stored as a reply to the topic. Similarly, replies made directly to the topic in the forum also show up as comments for the record.

This functionality can be enabled at a per-database and per-category level. You can specify separate forums for each category in your article section, for instance, or you can turn off forum commenting for a specific category, while enabling it for all others.

A few additional configuration options, such as allowing you to automatically remove the topic when the record is removed, and specifying a prefix and/or suffix for the topic title so that your users can more easily identify that such topics were stemmed from the articles section help round out the feature, giving you better control over how these automatically posted topics are handled.

The forum cross-posting capabilities allow the administrator to better tie in articles with the forums, giving you better opportunities to expose your content to a wider audience. Additionally, forum management of comments provides for easier maintenance and stronger managerial options of the comments, utilizing IP.Board's powerful, proven feature set.

Template Variables Help

by @ Templates - Articles
