What's the label all about?

by @ Natural Chemist: Latest News

Understanding medicine regulations – what’s the label all about?

When you buy any kind of medicine, supplement or other complementary treatment, be that prescription or over-the-counter, a sunscreen or a vitamin supplement, it is important that you have a certain amount of information to help you make an informed purchase.

The label on these types of products tells you what you are buying, what it does and how to use it. It provides information about how to store the product and it’s expiry date.

Testing and quality control

Before it can be sold in Australia, all medicine, prescription and complementary, has to go through regulation for safety and quality, carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, part of the Australian Government Department of Health.

Australia has a two-tiered system for the regulation of all medicines, including complementary, and it is based on risk:

Lower risk medicines can be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) (AUST L)

Higher risk medicines must be registered on the ARTG (AUST R)

It is useful to note that some complementary medicines are exempt from the requirement to be included on the ARTG, such as certain homoeopathic preparations. A full list of exempt products can be found on the TGA website.

AUST R products: assessed for safety, quality and effectiveness. They include all prescription only medicines and many over-the-counter products such as those for pain relief, coughs and colds and antiseptic creams.

Prescription only medicines do not display their purpose on the label as the decision for using them lies with a doctor; however, over-the-counter medicines must have a purpose displayed.

AUST L products:only contain pre-approved, low-risk ingredients. They are used for minor health problems and are reviewed for safety and quality. They include sunscreens over SPF4 and many vitamin, mineral, herbal and homoeopathic products. Again their purpose must be included on the label.

If you have any questions or concerns about the products you are taking and the safety or quality of them, don’t hesitate to contact us at: www.naturalchemist.com.au or call us on T: 1300 882 303, and we’d be happy to help.

The Ultimate Guide to Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes

by Tashina Combs @ Logical Harmony

Many Logical Harmony readers ask for help finding cruelty-free makeup brushes. For many people who transition to a cruelty-free beauty routine, switching to cruelty-free makeup brushes is often one of the last steps. So many makeup brushes are made from animal fur or animal hair. While some brands do claim that it is ethically sourced, the truth is that they often don’t know where the fur is sourced from. Just like with false lashes, many animal hair makeup brushes are bi-products of the factory farming or fur industries. While most cruelty-free consumers do focus on avoiding animal testing, many also avoid makeup brushes that are not synthetic. That’s why I decided to create this guide to cruelty-free makeup brushes. There are so many vegan makeup brushes out there to try. All the brands listed do make vegan makeup brushes but may make some non-vegan brushes as well. What are Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes? Cruelty-free makeup brushes are made from synthetic fibers. They are not made from animal fur or animal hair. Can brands that are cruelty-free make makeup brushes from animal fur or animal hair? Yes. Because the term “cruelty-free” refers to animal testing, brands that do not test on animals can make makeup […]

When the Leaping Bunny Logo is a Lie | Cruelty-Free Kitty

When the Leaping Bunny Logo is a Lie | Cruelty-Free Kitty

Cruelty-Free Kitty

Butter London nail polish bottles proudly sport a Leaping Bunny logo, but the information I came across shows that it might be a sham: There is no mention or official claim on the brand's website. Why would Butter London keep so quiet about being cruelty-free? In May 2012, the company claimed to be "in the process" of getting their Leaping Bunny certification. After checking with the Leaping Bunny, no record of Butter London being "in the process" of getting certified was found. Even if they were in the process of getting certified, they would not be able to display the logo until after they officially became certified, since companies have to pay for the right to display the logo, and they can only do so after they join the program. Displaying a logo while being in the process of acquiring certification simply makes no sense! The company has had the same Leaping Bunny logo on its nail polish at least since 2010. This makes their claim even more ridiculous.Of course, I have e-mailed Butter London about this matter. Their reply was vague and elusive...

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Eating Girl Scout Cookies at the Oscars Is the Internet’s Best New Meme

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

RELATED: The Best Girl Scout Cookie Recipes

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Also Thin Mint brownie sundaes.

Also Samoas-flavored birthday cake.

Can you tell we’re excited about it?

They are also free of any animal testing and have vegan options. Just as with the Cruelty-Free Brand List, it is noted next to a brand if they are owned by a company who tests on animals. It is also noted if they are a 100% vegan brand. Cruelty-free brands at Nordstrom: Anastasia Beverly Hills Aquis Aveda – It should be noted that they are cruelty-free, but their parent company is not. bare Minerals – It should be noted that they are cruelty-free, but their parent company is not. Timeless' Matt Lanter and His Wife Like 'Old-Fashioned Names' for Daughter on the Way: It Won't 'Be Apple or Banana'

by Lindsay Kimble @ PEOPLE.com

Matt Lanter‘s little lady might not have a name just yet – but the Timeless star and his wife Angela have some ideas.

Chatting with PEOPLE Saturday at the Step2 Presents 6th Annual Celebrity Red CARpet Safety Awareness Event in Los Angeles, the expectant parents revealed that they’re zeroing in on a moniker for their daughter, who is due to arrive in January.

“We have a name that we are in the ballpark of,” Lanter told PEOPLE. “We don’t want to 100 percent commit to anything, but we’re tight-lipped either way, just because that is one thing we do want to keep secret for ourselves.”

“We’re not 100 percent sure, but we know we like something,” he adds.

The mom-to-be teases that her husband has had “a hard time committing to a name,” though the pair note they’ve mostly settled on their baby girl‘s middle name.

And although Lanter and his wife want something “a little different” for their daughter to go by, the actor notes, “It’s not going to be Apple or Banana or something like that.”

Continues the 34-year-old 90210 alum, “We like the idea of old-fashioned names. We also like family-associated names … we’ll probably do something in that realm.”

The couple, who married in 2013, confirmed their pregnancy to PEOPLE in August. The baby girl on the way will be the first child for both.

Overall, Angela – who is six months along – says she’s “feeling great,” although her “first trimester was rough.”

And Lanter couldn’t be more ready to add the title of “Dad” to his résumé, sharing, “I personally feel lucky and grateful to be able to have a kid on the way and a lot of people can’t. My appreciation is that so far we have a healthy baby.”

But each month I do find that there are cruelty-free products I am reaching for time and time again. This includes some hair care, skin care, makeup, and other beauty products. Products mentioned in my Cruelty-Free Favorites from August video are: Lush Rose Lollipop Lip Balm Kopari Lip Love Cover FX Blurring Primer Lily Lolo Coralista Blush & Highlight Duo Cover FX Illuminating Setting Spray NCLA Pressed Collection COOLA Sunless Tan Face Serum OSEA Sea Vitamin Boost Derma E Nourishing Rose Cleansing Oil Marley’s Monsters Cloths Kopari Coconut Body Milk Nature’s Gate Glow Lotion Lush Sleepy Lotion Little Moon Essentials Sleep Comes Easy Mist Schmidt’s Sensitive Skin Jasmine Tea Deodorant Kaia Naturals Takasumi Detox Deodorant (use code LOGICALHARMONY for 15% off) Apoterra Skincare Sea Mist Salt Spray (use code LOGICALHARMONY for 10% off) During this video, I also mentioned the following cruelty-free beauty […]

Franklin & Whitman Oak Lane Mask Demo #MaskMonday

by Tashina Combs @ Logical Harmony

I love trying out new face masks and have been having a lot of fun sharing face mask demos with you. The Franklin & Whitman Oak Lane Mask is made from clay, cocoa, charcoal, and turmeric and claims to leave your skin feeling radiant and renewed. But does it work? Find out in this video! Franklin & Whitman is not only cruelty-free and vegan, but they also donate 5% of their sales to dog rescue organizations. I think it’s great to see brands give back. This is especially impressive to me because it’s from their sales, not profits. Founder Chris Cieri was just on the Katie Dalebout podcast, where he talked a lot about the history of the company and their mission. I highly suggest listening to it. Is Frankin & Whitman Cruelty-Free? Yes. Franklin & Whitman is cruelty-free, and all of their products are also vegan. They are on the Logical Harmony Cruelty-Free Brand List. Is the Franklin & Whitman Oak Lane Mask vegan? Yes. The Franklin & Whitman Oak Lane Mask is vegan. It is free from any animal and animal derived ingredients. Products included in the Franklin & Whitman Oak Lane Mask Demo video are: Franklin & Whitman […]

The Truth Behind May Contain Ingredient Lists

by Tashina Combs @ Logical Harmony

One of the most common questions that I get is asking what the May Contain Ingredient Lists on products mean. I get at least a handful of emails each week from confused readers who don’t understand why a product that claims to be vegan has “may contain carmine” or “may contain beeswax” listed on the packaging. Does this mean the product isn’t vegan? Does it contain carmine, beeswax, or other ingredients? This is something I have talked to many brands about. In this post, I share the three common reasons why brands put May Contain Ingredient Lists on their packaging. This is the most recent update of a post I originally published on August 19, 2015. What do may contain ingredient lists mean? Often times after a list of ingredients, you will see “may contain” followed by another list of various ingredients. This is very common on the packaging for cosmetics. Especially for products that contain a variety of shades. There are a few different things that may contain ingredient lists mean, and those will be explained in this post. 1. The brand wants to use one ingredient list for all shades of a product, even if not all of the shades […]
