Guest Post: Nail Care to Help Boost Confidence

by noreply@blogger.com (Allison) @ The Polish Lab

 Hello Lab Partners!

Today, we have a special post by Jackie Clark, who the outreach coordinator at the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. Nail polish may seem frivolous to some, but we at The Polish Lab know that nail care can serve very important purposes, one of which is helping those with serious illnesses to feel better about themselves. We're pleased to have Jackie share some tips on how you can use your love of nail care to help those suffering from illnesses, and feel free to comment with any additional tips or experiences you've had with using nail polish to help boost someone's confidence.

Nail Care to Help Boost Confidence
By: Jackie Clark

One of the most difficult trials in life can be facing a possibly terminal illness. Illnesses such as cancer, including mesothelioma, can bring a person’s self confidence to a plummeting free fall. Given the treatments as well as their side effects and the concerns over what sort of mesothelioma life expectancy they may be looking at, it’s not a surprise that many women have a tendency to allow their selves to slip in certain areas of their appearance. One area that tends to be overlooked in such cases is nail care.

Nail care may not seem like such a large area of consideration when a person is suffering from cancer, the fact is that it’s the small touches, such as having attractive nails, which can help boost a woman’s spirits in an otherwise bleak time. While this is why it’s so important for a woman suffering from an illness to take the time for her self to be pampered, even if it is just taking the time to polish manicure and polish her nails. While this may seem like a trivial thing, the fact is that the little bit of time that it takes can make a big difference in how a woman suffering from such an illness can feel; especially during a time when her morale needs all the boosting it can get.

Taking the time needed for nail pampering isn’t as difficult as one might think. Many believe that nail care means going to a salon for a full manicure and pedicure, but it’s easy to make a fun girls’ day out of it with friends and family members. Imagine the excitement of having a group of female friends and family members together for a girls’ day of beauty. It’s simple to organize: simply get together a set of manicure and pedicure kits for all of your guests, and have everyone bring their favorite shades of nail polish and foot soak; you’ll also want to have everyone bring their own tub for soaking their feet. When the day arrives, simply enjoy yourselves-- and the best part is that you have helped her, a loved one, to feel a little better about their situation and given them a boost of confidence.

Sometimes, even during the beyond-hot dog days of summer, I crave a rich, dark nail color. This is La Moss by Butter London and it’s dark and amazing and beautiful. I am just about excited as all hell because I won a frickin' giveaway!!*  No, but really.  I totally did win.  This, after I was telling my friend just yesterday that I never win any of the giveaways I enter.  Free shit rocks, especially when it's cool free shit.  Those polishes in the new Ninja Polish Facets Collection look interesting and I can't wait to try them out.  Thanks so much, Rhonni!

*It's kinda like when the name of the movie is mentioned in the movie, huh?

Butter London’s Nonie Creme Just Nails It

Vanities

Nonie Creme's Valentine Collection in three shades of rouge: Come to Bed Red, Chancer, and Pillar Box Red.Even if you didn’t see Butter London’s creative director, Nonie Creme, backstage during Fashion Week this fall, you certainly saw her nail designs: bubblegum confections at Victoria Beckham, rainbow racing stripes at Betsey Johnson, matte-taupe pearls at Alexander Wang, and vintage half-moons at Vena Cava. Fashion fans could hardly wait for the polish to dry to take the looks from the catwalk to the sidewalk. It’s not the first time Creme has been on the forefront of a ubiquitous trend. “Ack! Greige! I’m not doing greige anymore!” says Creme. “It’s so funny, because we’ve been making Fash Pack—our beautiful gray beige—since the beginning. You’re always going to need that color. But we’ve all gotten stuck in this greige rut!”This spring Creme is brightening the palette with her new collection: pop-art pink Teddy Girl (as seen at Victoria Beckham), periwinkle Lady Muck, cobalt-blue Blagger, apple-green Dosh, and opal Hen Party. As ever, the polishes are mixed without “chemical nasties” and inspired by what’s happening on the runway. (Creme’s Fall 2010 collection paid tribute to the late Alexander McQueen.) To catch Creme before Fashion Week, I stopped by Butter London’s flagship Seattle airport salon to get a manicure from the nail maven herself. In person, Creme is a pretty pixie with a rock ’n’ roll vibe. She describes choosing Butter London’s rectangular bottle because it reminded her of “Coco Chanel’s naughty English kid sister,” and the same could be said of Creme. One minute she’s articulately describing Butter London’s new strategy to streamline the brand by focusing on products, and the next she’s playfully translating their names, such as Jaffa and Minger.

feeling stupid and... yeah just stupid

by noreply@blogger.com (Hazelnut) @ peachbubbly

Hello~

Soooo....... I'm feeling really stupid right now..

So I sent an email saying that I wanted to cancel something for college, but then I realized that I made a mistake and actually wanted to NOT cancel. So six minutes after sending my first email, I sent it to the lady again apologizing for the mistake and saying that I don't want to cancel.

Guess what. A couple hours later, the lady responds, saying that she cancelled my thing.

Did she not even look at my second email? Plus in the first email, I asked her a couple of questions, and she didn't respond to any of them.

So, I sent another email right away explaining the situation. I really hope she actually reads her email this time, because I really can't have my college thing being cancelled... T-T

I know, it's mostly my fault for making a mistake and sending the email in the first place. FSJDKLFJSDLKJ my life right now is so stressful... The problem is that I'm the one who makes it so stressful.

Sigh. Hopefully it works out. If it doesn't, I guess I can't help it. I learned the hard way. Read the fine print guys! I'll just have to pay for my mistake.. literally.

I also want to kick myself in the butt for not working on all these college documents and forms sooner.. I'm going on a trip later this week and won't be back until July 4th, so I gotta do these in the next couple of days before I go.. T_T stupid of me...

Sorry for not posting nails and other stuff.. I will soon~

'Til next time!

EDIT: Yay she reinstated my thing! Phew...! Now I gotta work on my resume and apply for jobs..

Review & Swatchfest: Butter London Lippy in Yummy Mummy - The Daily Bailey B

The Daily Bailey B

Butter London Lippy in Yummy Mummy Butter London’s Lippy in Yummy Mummy is described as a medium beige lip gloss – a true nude. I wouldn’t really call it a “nude” as it has a strong grey hue in the tube. Rather “taupe” might be the best way to describe it. At first I was …

Are you there, blog? It's me, Ryan.

by noreply@blogger.com (Ryan) @ Finger Flair

Hey, strangers.  How've you been?  Wish I could explain my absence by telling you that I've been off fighting evil villains and saving unicorns, but that would be a huge whopper of a fib and my daddy taught me better than that.  Nope, I've just been busy doing regular life.  Still super loving nail polish and buying way more than is prudent.  Still sharing it with the interwebs, just over on Instagram, where it takes much less effort to do so.  I've decided to come back, though, as I have a rather ambitious project in mind that wouldn't work too well on IG.  Are you ready for this?  Hell, am I ready for this??

Well, here it is: I'm going to swatch my entire 2 helmer collection.  By brand.  Oh, man, I'm sweating just thinking about doing this.  But I can do it; yes, I can do it.  I will do it, dammit!  I have entirely too many untried polishes in my stash and that needs to change.  How can I justify buying anything new when I don't even really know what I already have?  I did start a spreadsheet in an attempt to organize my pretties, and it does have them all listed, but I stopped adding color pretty quickly.  You'd think it'd be easy; pick up a bottle and it's blue!  But it's also green and purple and maybe it's a shimmer or a glass fleck or a foil or a duochrome (or is it multichrome?) and hey it's got glitter!  Made my head swim.  So I decided it would be better to just have pictures.  I thought about using pictures from my favorite bloggers, but I want to know and remember what the polishes look like on me and there's only one way to do that: slap a coat or 3 on and photograph that shit.

So.  First drawer of helmer 1 contains my non-US indies.  I'll do one brand per post and I'll start with aEngland.  Look for that coming up soon.

Later, dudes!

PS. Holy crap, WTF, Broncos?

Butter London Yummy Mummy | The Beauty Look Book

Butter London Yummy Mummy | The Beauty Look Book

The Beauty Look Book

Butter London Yummy Mummy is described as a magical shade that flatters every skin color. It’s one of those shades I have been intrigued by for quite a while but have never really been able to figure out from online photos and reviews. Is it a beige? Nude? Nude-mauve? Brown? Taupe? I think that’s the “magic” of this color. It looks different in every review and swatch due to different skintones. In the bottle I would describe it as a greige beigey fawn with silver shimmer. On the nails the color is different depending on what angle I look at it. Sometimes it looks mauvey. Sometimes it looks like a nude beige tan. Other times it looks like a mushroom. It’s odd how it changes color depending on the light. Overall it applies smoothly without streaks but I find it very sheer, much like Tea With the Queen that I reviewed a few days ago. I had to apply 3 coats to get it to show up, with each progressive coat thicker than the previous. It did dry pretty fast however which is a plus. It has the slightest bit of pearl to it which makes it so it’s not …

MIA

Yo yo yo, polish-loving friends. I just wanted to pop in to tell you why I've been MIA for so long. A friend is trying to help me shed some pounds and one of the things she's having me do is give up something I enjoy until I lose a certain amount of weight.  I chose blogging-- both writing my own and reading others.  I'm not there yet, but I hope to be soon!

However, we didn't say anything about Instagram, so come find me! My username is FingerFlair.

UPDATED - PRICES REDUCED!!!!!!

Hey Guys!!

Long time no post... sorry it's been so long!  Unfortunately this is probably going to be my last post for a while.  As you know I got married and Courtney had a baby.  And while I don't have as much of an excuse for not posting as Courtney, life is just too busy.  I have a new job and I'm going to grad school part time and my love of polish and blogging has just been the thing that had to give.

Since I'm not painting my nails nearly as much any more, I decided it was time for a major purge.  Hope these polishes can get some love at better homes.  I also have a few makeup items too.

A Follow-Up to Your Comments on Our Last Giveaway

by noreply@blogger.com (Allison) @ The Polish Lab

Hello Dear Readers--

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all your wonderful comments and questions you submitted on the entry form for our last giveaway. We do read the comments carefully and take note of what you say. Here's what we learned:

  • You liked the Spinal Tap theme (credit goes to Ace for that one!)
  • Many of you are particularly fond of Zoya polishes. Good to know, as we have a lot of Zoyas! I tend to think of Zoya as my "comfort" polish. You know how people have comfort foods they turn to when they're feeling under the weather or have had a rough day? When it comes to nail polish, that's how Zoya is for me. Not that I only wear Zoyas when I'm feeling icky . . . but I do tend to go to them when I just want to curl up in jammies and lounge around my house, burning a gingerbread candle. Hmmm . . . sounds like a topic for a future Polish Personals, no?
  • Some readers want to know how to get their polish to dry more quickly. We'll address that in a future post.
Two final points of note:
  • There was a question on today's Mystery Mani Monday post about when we post the answer. Each week, shortly after 9pm Pacific (midnight Eastern time) we post the answer to the MMM both in the comments section of the MMM post and on our FB page.
  • Would you like us to periodically feature a Q&A post?
If you ever have questions or comments that you'd like us to address in a future post, please feel free to email us at thepolishlab@gmail.com. We can't promise that all questions will be turned into a post, but there's a good chance!

Thoughts? Please comment below! And as always, thank you for following us!
