How to Find a Nontoxic and Sustainable Mattress

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

I have something admit. My mattress is not eco-friendly. Well, it is in the sense that I bought it used. Three years ago, I was sleeping on the Ikea mattress I had bought off the girl who lived in my room before me. When a downstairs neighbor had to abruptly move out and sell all his furniture, I picked up a Tempur-Pedic mattress for $300 (! They usually start at $1,600). That mattress is now covered with organic sheets, pillows, and pillow covers. But I never seriously considered getting a new one, even though I know most mattresses contain fire retardants, volatile organic compounds, and formaldehyde which offgas into our air while we sleep on them. Hours a night. Almost every night. For years. In fact, my mattress must be the most toxic thing in my home. And yet, mattresses are expensive. And getting rid of my current mattress would entail throwing it out – because of bed bugs, nobody wants to buy or even take an old mattress. But now that you can recycle your mattress in New York City, I might be ready to switch mine out. But buyer beware: Not all mattress companies who bill themselves as eco-friendly […]

Fashion, Not Formaldehyde! Toxin-Free Nail Polish For Every Budget

TrustedChoice.com

You practice yoga, drink green juice and buy non-GMO snacks. But do you know what’s in your nail polish? If not, you might just be surprised. The truth is, while no nail polish can be chemical-free, there are five different additives included in some nail polish formulations – substances used for shine, durability, fluidity and more – that have been identified as allergenic, carcinogenic or just plain toxic!Fortunately, plenty of cosmetic companies have realized it’s possible to make an excellent nail polish without using some or all of these five nasty toxins. Many of these brands use the terms “3-Free” or “5-Free” to designate which of the chemicals on this list have been left out of their nail polish formulations; but with some luxury brands, it’s much more hush-hush – a hidden benefit that simply isn’t advertised.Never fear, we’ve done some research for you… just see below! What are these 5 frightening toxins you can live without? Toluene: (used to give nail polish a smooth finish) is a common solvent used for paint thinner, lacquer, glue and ink. It is also used as a gasoline additive and in jet fuel blends. Inhalation at low levels can cause confusion, light-headedness and nausea; while higher levels of exposure may harm your nervous system. Formaldehyde: (used as a hardener and preservative) is also used in the embalming of dead animals and humans, in the production of particle board and industrial resins and was recently designated as a “known… human carcinogen” by a US government program. It is a skin, eye and respiratory irritant.

Living Toxic Free In City: Here is your list - The Toxic ingredients in our everyday beauty & bath products

Living Toxic Free In City: Here is your list - The Toxic ingredients in our everyday beauty & bath products:

I found a great blog post on an extensive list of toxic ingredients in our beauty and bath products. Would love to share here with everyone. It’s great to keep it in mind when shopping.

Cheers,

nourishedlifeau:

Here is your list - The Toxic ingredients in our everyday beauty & bath products

We are all so busy, so many of us have kids and are trying to juggle family, work, money, our health and the health of our family at all the same time. We all need to be as healthy and as energetic as possible and we can no longer be wasting money on tubs of toxic chemicals just because they come in beautiful packaging. Beauty & Bath products listing any of these on the label do nothing but mess with our hormones, zap us of energy and put us at risk of cancer and disease.

(Source: Dr Mercola, EWG, The Chemical Maze)

1. Parabens - Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Butylparaben.  These are synthetic preservatives used in an estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products. Studies link these with beast cancer because their hormone-disrupting qualities mimic estrogen and can disrupt our body’s endocrine system.

2. Mineral Oil, Paraffin, and Petrolatum - These petroleum products coat the skin like plastic – clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins. They can slow cellular development, creating earlier signs of aging. They’re implicated as a suspected cause of cancer. Plus, they can disrupt hormonal activity.

3. Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) - An engine degreaser, used to break down your skin’s moisture barrier, potentially leading to dry skin with premature aging. And because they easily penetrate your skin, they can allow other chemicals easy access. SLS combined with other chemicals may become a “nitrosamine” – a potent carcinogen.

4. Acrylamide - Found in many facial creams. Linked to mammary tumors.

5. Propylene glycol - Common cosmetic moisturizer and carrier for fragrance oils. A potential cause of dermatitis, may inhibit skin cell growth and linked to kidney and liver problems.

6. Phenol carbolic acid - Found in many lotions and skin creams. Can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma, and even death from respiratory failure.

7. Dioxane - Hidden in ingredients such as PEG, polysorbates, laureth, ethoxylated alcohols. Very common in personal care products. These chemicals are often contaminated with high concentrations of highly volatile 1,4-dioxane that’s easily absorbed through the skin. Its carcinogenicity was first reported in 1965, and later confirmed in studies including one from the National Cancer Institute in 1978.

8. Toluene - May be very poisonous!  Made from petroleum and coal tar… found in most synthetic fragrances. Chronic exposure linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage…May affect a developing fetus.

9. Urea - Including diazolindyl urea, imidazolindyl urea. Common preservatives that release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, that is irritating to the mucous membranes and known to cause contact dermatitis, headaches and internal bleeding.

10. Phthalates - Including di-butyl-phthalate, di-ethylhexyl-phthalate. Used as a plasticizer in everything from skincare, cosmetics, nail polish, perfume to hair products and deodorants. Known to cause damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system. Suspected of causing birth defects.

12. Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) - These chemicals can react with other ingredients in the cosmetic product to form potent carcinogenic chemicals called nitrosamines.

13. Synthetic Fragrances. “Fragrance” on an ingredient list can refer to a combination of any of the thousand separate ingredients used to make up the “fragrance”, many of which are phthalates (ie. toxic carcinogens and hormone disruptors).

14. Synthetic Colors - such as FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Red 40. These are labeled FD&C or D&C followed by a number, they are known to cause skin irritation and sensitivity. Many are also believed to be carcinogenic.

The Ultimate Guide to Eco-Friendly and Healthy Laundry

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

Did you know that 39% of a garment’s environmental impact comes from consumer care? Yup, you do have more power than you think to reduce your fashion’s impact. And now that we’ve been living in our apartment for three years, I have our clean laundry routine down pat. (Well, I can’t speak for my husband. He does his own laundry!) My goal is to use non-toxic products, reduce my energy and waste, and make my clothing last as long as possible: stain-free, unfaded or shrunk, odor-free, and in good shape. When you’ve come from a life of Mountain-fresh-pine-scented Tide and fabric softener; fluffy hot laundry straight out of the dryer; and the latest scientific advances in stain-removal technology, I could understand why you might raise your eyebrows at the idea of “regressing” back to the old way of doing things. But doing laundry the healthy and eco-friendly way feels just as nourishing as switching from Twinkies back to a homemade blackberry cobbler. I should add that I’ve personally never minded doing laundry. Yes, sometimes it takes me a while to get around to it. But I find it meditative and satisfying to concentrate on something so hands-on. And I’ve […]

Green Beauty Review: Simple and Nourishing Beauty Is What I Need Right Now

by Catherine Harper @ Ecocult

Minimalism is one of those trends that may prove to be truly evergreen. With the hustle of modern life and the instability of the current political climate, it’s refreshing to find products that are simply made and easy to use. Kaliks Collective, a brand of handcrafted, small batch skincare, truly exemplifies the basic tenets of minimalism. The story behind Kaliks Collective is familiar: founder Allison Hodge suffered from skin issues for many years and, unable to find products to soothe her own skin, she began learning to make her own. Research is at the core of Kaliks Collective’s philosophy, and Allison studied functional medicine and herbs while earning certifications as a Western Herbalist and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. She is currently working to earn a diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation. This dedication to the science behind the ingredients is evident within her products, as each is carefully formulated with with no more than 12 ingredients that offer medicinal and healing effects. As someone with sensitive skin, I was fortunate to try all four of Kaliks Collective’s products, and each item is gentle and soothing. Currently, the line features a cleanser, hydrosol, facial oil, and bath soak. A perfume oil […]

Welcome!

by @ Good. Clean. Style.

This blog is born from a conversation with a friend about GMO corn.

After a nice dinner out with a friend, we were talking about healthier way of eating. I congratulated her on eating well by choosing mainly salad and protein. She mentioned that she was making a salad with quinoa, tomato and corns. I stopped her there, and added on my remarks about corns in North America mostly are GMO. To her surprise, she never heard of this. She was intrigued then by my explanation on why corns are 80% GMO due to the history of Monsanto and ethanol was used as weapon fuel in WWII. She was fascinated by these info and thought she would never have thought of it if I haven’t told her this.

After this conversation, I have been thinking the best way to share my findings of the past 7 years with others. Therefore the birth of this blog! There are tons and tons of blogs out there teaching either one of these: organic food, healthy eating, safe personal products and design. I have yet to come across one that serves all of these in one little package. That’s what I hope you will find it here. Good living. Clean conscience. In style.

Weekend Reading: Turns Out There Are Sweatshops in Britain

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

Readers, I’m going silent for exactly one week, starting Monday morning. No email, no blog posts, no social media. Here’s why. In the meantime, enjoy this reading! Fashion I wrote this treatise on 10 things you can do to shop more sustainably for Racked, as part of their three-part package on thoughtful shopping. British sweatshops are worse than in Asia. | The Times You need three tote bags, max. | Racked What if we switched to the “performance economy” for clothing? | Business of Fashion What does ethical fashion really mean? | Racked  Industrial waste outside of Mumbai is turning dogs blue. | The Guardian  Beauty We should ban glitter. | Mother Nature Network I tweeted at the author of this story about sunscreen poisoning coral reefs, asking about avobenzone, which is used in many natural sunscreens in lieu of oxybenzone. She said, “It seems dubious as well. i was hoping it would be better.” So… unresolved question? | NY Times Truth in Advertising filed a complaint in California against GOOP and it makes for fascinating reading. | EcoCult inbox Food Why intelligent people fall for the #cleaneating fad. | The Guardian Climate change is coming for your cava and champagne. | Quartz […]

Weekend Reading: You’re Drinking Plastic Right Now

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

Hi readers! I’m back from my much-needed, two-week hiatus from the internet. Burning Man was out of this world incredible this year. (I’ll be sharing my ethically-made outfits next week.) I ran into Jovana Djuric, a sustainable jewelry designer, at a camp called 1001 Nights, and we spent some quality time together. I also got a foot massage, had my dream written down and put inside a little jar with playa dust, left a letter for another mystery Burner and picked one out myself from a chest, was fed fresh watermelon, discussed Israel and Middle East conflict with a Swiss-Armenian…and that was in a couple hours at one camp! Multiply that by a whole week and you might understand my overabundance of gratitude. I shared my thoughts on Instagram, however, concerning the man who ran into the burning man, and why Burning Man can be really difficult. It has been for me in the past. Ironically, I saw Ingrid Goes West in Denver before I went offline. It’s a dark comedy about Instagram influencers, and it was disturbingly accurate. This article articulates my thoughts perfectly. Before I left, I wrote this piece for Fast Company Ideas about how fashion is destroying the […]
